The Rhode Island Community Food Bank has declared September “Hunger Action Month.” As a member of the Feeding America nationwide network, the Food Bank hopes to inspire people to take action and raise awareness to address hunger in our community.
According to Food Bank statistics, 60,000 Rhode Islanders seek food assistance each month, nearly one-third of them children. Through our network of 160 member agencies from Westerly to Woonsocket, clients are able to access food and other services to help stock their shelves. With the release of its September issue, Bon Appétit has unveiled its annual Hot 10 list, crowning the ten best new restaurants in America - and a new Providence eatery has cracked the list.
Comedian James Davis expands his presence on Comedy Central as the #1 brand in comedy has greenlit a linear series starring, created and executive produced by Davis, it was announced today by Kent Alterman, President, Comedy Central. Davis, host of “Swag-A-Saurus with James Davis,” Comedy Central’s most watched Snapchat original series, grew up “hood-adjacent” and brings his unique, urban point-of-view to the new weekly series set to premiere in January 2017. The untitled series was originated by Davis and Doug Karo and is executive produced by Davis and Brillstein Entertainment Partners’ Alex Murray and Shawna Kornberg.”
The University of Rhode Island’s research vessel Endeavor has carried scientists, students and teachers throughout the world’s oceans to conduct scientific research since its christening 40 years ago.
Now it’s the public’s turn to glimpse the ship. URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography will offer tours of the vessel from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Narragansett Bay Campus, 215 South Ferry Road in Narragansett. The tours are free and open to all with one caveat: shoes with flat soles and closed toes and closed heels are required. CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation today announced a $100,000 donation in cash and in-kind support to organizations providing relief efforts to flood victims in central Louisiana, including the Salvation Army USA Southern Territory and the American Red Cross.
The CVS Health Foundation made a $50,000 to the Salvation Army USA Southern Territory which reported that more than 11,000 people remained in shelters this week after flooding forced rescues and evacuations in southern Louisiana. They are providing meals, water, hygiene kits, clean-up kits and other much-needed items to help those who have been affected by the floods.

A staple in Providence's bustling arts and entertainment scene may soon become nothing more than a fond memory. The owner is claiming this to be false, but other sources -- including employees -- have stated otherwise.
According to these sources, Rich Lupo, founder and co-owner of Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in downtown Providence has sold a majority stake of his business to the operators of Roxy Providence, the nightclub that currently shares use of the venue with Lupo's. A 1940's documentary that highlights the industry and community accomplishments of Rhode Island in a unique way surfaced on YouTube this week. The video provides an overview of the State of Rhode Island, with an emphasis on the social values and attitudes its citizens hold in such high regard. The film also shows how industry in the State is helping America's efforts during World War Two.
