In like a lion, out like a lamb.  March, assuming the idiom is true, is slated to be warm, and dry-- and we New Englanders certainly deserve it after all we've been through this winter. 

March in New England always features some great events that will allow you to get out of your snowed-in homes, and get a taste of fun.  From St. Patrick's Day parties to Collegiate Championships, check out these 9 great March events for New Englanders!

Harpoon St. Patrick's Day Festival
March 6-7
Harpoon Brewery, Boston

In South Boston, Harpoon decided years ago that limiting St. Patrick’s Day to just one day didn’t make any sense. Let’s face it, cabin fever can wreak havoc on New England winters, and come March we need a reason to celebrate. So head up to Southie for a visit and start the season with Harpoon at the Harpoon St. Patrick’s Festival.

2015 Scrabble Ball

RI Convention Center

The 2015 Hasbro Children’s Hospital Scrabble Ball, seeking to raise critical funds for the area’s leading pediatric institution, will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Hosted by Sirius XM “70s on 7” midday personality, Jay Beau Jones, the event begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and Hors d’oeuvres, followed by welcoming remarks in the Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. The evening continues with dinner and a Live Auction at 7:30 p.m. A special performance by The Spinners will take place at 10:00 p.m., followed by dessert and dancing to the fabulous music mixes of DJ Twalle until midnight.

AAC Championship Tournament
March 12-15
XL Center, Hartford

The 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship will be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, March 12-15. All 11 American Athletic Conference teams will compete for the league title, including 2014 NCAA champion UConn, which is one of the six conference teams that have reached the NCAA Final Four. The 11 teams that comprise the American Athletic Conference have a combined six NCAA titles, made 22 Final Four appearances, 67 Sweet Sixteen appearances and 173 NCAA tournament appearances.

Newport St. Patrick's Day Parade
March 14
Newport, RI

The 59th Annual Newport, Rhode Island Saint Patrick's Day Parade will be held, rain, snow, or shine, on Saturday, March 14th 2015.  The 2-hour parade will begin at 11:00 am from Newport City Hall and will proceed to Carroll Avenue at Saint Augustin’s Church in the heart of the Fifth Ward.  This year's event will include Pipe Bands, Marching Bands, Fife & Drum Corps, Clown Units, reenactment units, and a host of local, state, and regional organizations including police and fire units, social/fraternal organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Schools, and non-profits.

Pi Day at Mike's Pastry

Mike's Pastry is widely-considered  to be one of the best bakeries in Boston.  In the heart of the North End, this pastry shop  has long been a stop for diners after eating at one of the area's dozens of Italian restaurants, Mike’s Pastry has a wide range of delicious treats, including pie. More than 60 percent of Rhode Islanders are Roman Catholic, and each March 19th, they show their pastry-otism. And the preferred treat of the day is the Zeppole, an Italian pastry consisting of a deep-fried dough ball about 4 inches in diameter. This doughnut or fritter is usually topped with powdered sugar, and may be filled with custard, jelly, cannoli-style pastry cream or a butter-and-honey mixture.  Stop by you favorite Italian bakery to pick up a dozen!

Tour De Patrick
March 21

Downtown Providence

Beginning at 11 am at the Rhode Island Statehouse,  the 2015 St. Pat's 5K will kickoff, as a lead in to the Providence's St. Patrick's Day Parade. This year's St. Patrick's Day Parade will be  Grand Marshaled by Irish native, and newly retired, Father Bernard O'Reilly.  Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements will serve as the Deputy Marshall.

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters, featuring some of the greatest athletes and entertainers on the planet, will bring their unrivaled family show to Providence on March 21st as part of the Harlem Globetrotters 2015 “Washington Generals’ Revenge” Tour. 

The Globetrotters will face a great challenge this year, as the infamous Washington Generals are more determined than ever to match the franchise’s historic last victory over the Globetrotters nearly a half century ago.
