![]() "Mechanics is now an Information Industry," says Brian Joseph during a rare quiet moment at Island Woods Auto Repair. Seated behind his desk in the small office, he looks a bit like pro wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin, although much more friendly and approachable. He waves his hand at a small gadget, which turns out to be a diagnostic device, the key to discovering what ails your auto. "This is a $2000 piece of equipment," he says. "But it's useless if you don't know what everything it tells you means." These days, troubleshooting a high-tech vehicle involves a lot more than a quick peek under the hood. "You have to know what you're looking for," says Brian, "and that only comes with experience." In this case, 15 years of hands-on experience. Everything from oil changes, to brake jobs, to complete engine rebuilds. Competence is not something to take for granted these days, but Brian assures us you'll find it here. What separates Island Woods from the also-rans?: Diagnostics. Simply put, knowing what the problem is before you fix it, and getting the job done right the first time. ![]() Island Woods bills itself as a general auto repair shop. However, when pressed, its owner admits to a passion for Restoration and Custom Work. His favorite recent project? "63' Corvette Stingray," Brian says. "Complete restoration, all original parts." The classic car culture is active in Rhode Island, but not large enough to sustain a business around here on its own. So he also has time to install a new exhaust system in your old Ford, or align the front-end alignment on your Chrysler. Whether it's the family Buick or a Classic Sports Car, your ride is in good hands.
