This week's offering comes from the fine folks at Grey Sail Brewing Company out of Westerly, RI. First thing I always like to do when tasting a new beer is completely skip over the manufacture's description and form my own opinion prior to reading. Having a good source to purchase your adult beverages from helps this process, as a knowledgeable proprietor can easily suggest something that will appease your taste buds. Now on to my review of Grey Sail Brewing Company's "Flying Jenny" Extra Pale Ale: Upon my initial pour the beautiful dark golden, unfiltered appearance of this beer really stood out. Color and appearance in the proper glass is very important as with food presentation on the plate, after all we eat/drink with our eyes first. The nose has a lovely hoppy, floral, citrus to it which begs you to dive in right away. First sip confirms the nose, with an orange or lemon start, with a wonderful hop bite finish. Now don't get me wrong, many friends I know can't handle a strong hop, but i think this is just the right amount leaving a sweet after taste letting you know you just had a quality beer. Some strong IPA's can be hard to polish off due to the hop bite which many refer to as "bitter". The overall drinkability of this beer makes a nice, hot, sunny day all the more enjoyable, remaining light but fulfilling to the last drop and making you want more. Price is right around $10 for a six pack which is better than other small batch price points, making this beer all the more appetizing.
Ferro Rating (1-5) Color- 4.5 (Rich, golden, unfiltered greatness) Nose- 3.5 (mild, floral, hop, citrus) Flavor- 4.5 ( tastes as good as it looks, Lemon sweetness on the tongue/ just the right amount of hop finish) Drinkability- 4 ( I already want another as I type this) Price- 4 (@ $10 for a six pack) Overall - 20.5 out of 25 (Great for a summer day mowing the lawn or grilling up some grub, would be perfect with a nice steak and can definitely hold its own with some good BBQ. I'll be enjoying my remaining ones with some brats on the grille) Check out Gray Sail Brewing Company online at www.GreySailBrewing.com or stop by for a free tour and tasting every Saturday from 1PM-5PM at 63 Canal Street in beautiful Westerly, RI. -Ferro |
