In the past 16 years, Newport Storm has brewed close to 60 varieties of craft beer. Some have stayed on to become year round staples or seasonal favorites, while others have been glimpses of the impressive brewing capabilities and varieties they can offer to craft beer lovers of all kinds. To mark Newport Storm’s continued dedication to brewing fresh and unique craft brews, they opted for a challenge with their latest 4 pack addition, Rye of the Storm. Unlike its sweet cousin Barley, or its bold sister Wheat, Rye is a spicy son of a brew all its own. The brewers at Storm got ridiculous with this one and doubled the rye and the IPA. This beer goes way beyond adding a bunch of citrus hops to the kettle and slapping “IPA” on the label and tops off at 8% ABV. Rye, often associated with things like bread and distilled spirits, is an unusual and resilient brewing grain in that it is husk-less and thrives under poor conditions (somewhat fitting after the 60+ inches of snow New Englanders have suffered through in the past 20 days!). A staple in the diets of Northern Europeans and Canadians, rye offers a unique drinking experience that is sure to please craft beer lovers. Rye imparts an earthy, spicy flavor to the brew that cannot be achieved any other way. To compliment the spice of the rye, brewers chose a mix of hops like Cascade, New Zealand Orbit and German Tradition which invokes floral and tropical citrus aroma and an American Pale Ale kick. Rye of the Storm’s smooth mouth-feel and crisp after taste will certainly leave you wanting more. Rye of the Storm will be available in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Maine starting this week.
