This year’s event is presented by the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau and sponsored by the Federal Hill Commerce Association and Rhode Island Monthly.
In continuing the annual tradition, a “King of the Hill” will be named. The contest, in which Stroll attendees cast a vote for their favorite participating venue, awards $1,000 to the winning venue. Stroll-goers may also vote for the “Most Creative” stop on the Stroll. The two awards for 2016 will be announced by GoProvidence on June 8. For participating in the voting, one ballot will also be drawn at random, with the winner receiving a complimentary dinner for two at a Federal Hill restaurant Google and the IMAX Corporation announced Thursday at Google's annual developer conference, Google I/O, that the companies are working to develop a cinema-grade virtual reality (VR) camera – the IMAX® VR camera – to enable today's leading filmmakers and content creators to deliver the highest-quality 3D 360-degree content experiences to audiences worldwide.
IMAX's team of engineers and camera specialists will work with Google to design the new high-resolution cameras from the ground up, leveraging IMAX's best-in-class capture technology that has become an integral tool for today's biggest and most visionary filmmakers including Christopher Nolan, J.J. Abrams, Michael Bay, Anthony and Joe Russo, and Zack Snyder, among others. The camera, which will be built to utilize Jump, a platform for creating and viewing 3D 360 video, will deliver the highest-quality, most-immersive virtual reality content to consumers. Geek Cred Episode #20 5/9/16 - The enthusiasm and ferocity of Captain America: Civil War spills over into an actual civil war in studio as Deven and Spanish Mike battle it out! From the sidelines, John eggs them on and, hopefully, also keeps them on track to discuss other news including Call of Duty's Youtube debacle and more!"
While some of the nation's top golfers compete on the greens at the CVS Health Charity Classic, June 26-28, area residents can get involved in a series of fun "outside-the-ropes" events designed to provide new ways for people to give back to their local community.
The CVS Health Charity Classic, which has donated more than $19 million to area nonprofits since 1999, has added a variety of events for golf and non-golf fans alike, including a public benefit concert. Here's a look at the events taking place this June: John Davidson
Captain America: Civil War can't even wait for its own credits to roll and, instead, begins its story as soon as possible by reintroducing us to the titular Winter Soldier of the previous Captain America film. What follows is a film that is easily the equal to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which I considered not only the best superhero movie ever released but also one of the best action films ever made. Returning to the world of Marvel superheroes, the Russo brothers have once again crafted a movie that is primarily driven not by the needs of a story but, rather, by solid characterizations. Opening up with early action scenes, the movie makes it very clear that, though like Winter Soldier, this movie is going to be big on morality and issues of power, it will be just as focused on excitement and fun. In fact, it is a constant sense of fun that propels Civil War despite its heavy narrative, giving it the sort of energy that was completely lacking in the other recent hero vs. hero movie to be released: DC's Batman v. Superman which I berated for its lack of character, emotion and fun. Geek Cred Episode #19 5/2/16 - The Geek Cred crew was in full force this week, making fun of the latest news in video games -- and discussing potential fall-out from Batman v. Superman that has hit the DC cinematic universe!
Listen in for that along with a chat concerning a Hasbro movie-verse -- and more! During the forthcoming academic year, high school sophomores have the chance to enter a unique essay competition sponsored by the Newport Historical Society. This writing contest, entitled Big Ideas for a Changing World, asks students to explore the question, “What is happening now in your community, or what could be happening, that has the power to change the future in Rhode Island and potentially the world?”

Thursday is May 5th--or Cinco de Mayo to those of us who understand how to tell time in Spanish. To most Rhode Islanders, Cinco is simply another drinking holiday-- the third of the calendar year behind Super Bowl Sunday, and St. Patrick's Day, and ahead of Independence Day, Thanksgiving Eve, and New Year's Eve. Vote for your favorite drinking holiday in the poll below The Cafe Episode #284 5/3/16 - On this week's edition of the WBOB Bobcast The Cafe host Pal welcomes CES Boxing matchmaker and sports corespondent Michael Parente to break down Angel Camacho's backing out of the main event with Peter Manfredo, Jr. on May 13th.
"It's unfortunate but it happens in this sport," Parente stated as he discusses Angel Camacho Jr's injury. Parente goes on to tell the audience why they might be in store for a better feature fight with his replacement, Vladine Biosse. "He's fought the who's who at his weight." Parente says, referring to Biosse's resume. Besides a complete breakdown of the battle of Providence between Manfredo and Biosse there are a few laughs on this edition of the Cafe as well. Pal welcomes WBOB hosts Kevin Aherne and Joe Ferro to cover the news as well as discuss WBOB's upcoming fundraiser F-Bomb Friday. All that, plus a visit from Ben Polito -- vocalist for the New Orleans based alt rock trio Frail.

The Boy Scouts of America just celebrated its 100th anniversary -100 years of instilling lifelong values and lessons. The timelessness of the organization is telling of its lasting effects on generations of Scouts. Anyone who was a Scout, raised a Scout, or knew a Scout can tell you what a positive and lasting impact the program has on youth. But for those whose family members have not been a part of the Boy Scouts, how will they know the benefits? A recent study by Tufts University shows that boys who are Scouts show significant, positive differences in character attributes during developmental years than boys who are not scouts. |
