From the moment you walk into East Providence Tattoo, the feeling of creativity and enthusiasm going on here tells you the place is something special. Start with the huge painting on the wall of the two-headed Phoenix Bird that looks ready to take wing, and owner Jesus Rios quoting Latin.
"Sic parvis magna," he says. "Greatness from small beginings."
It's the motto of the shop. Rios has been ten years in the business. He apprenticed with Ronnie at Ronnie's Tattoo, and worked at Wicked Ink. But it became obvious early on that with his personal drive and optimism, Jesus Rios was born to be an entrepreneur, not an employee. He started his own business two years ago. "I named it East Providence Tattoo because I love this city. This is not work, its fun."

The shop employs six artists. You can get Traditional or New School artwork, but whichever you choose, your tattoo will be as unique and special as the artist who creates it. "We have natural artists here, not fake artists," says Rios. "Your tattoo will be original artwork." In other words, something that results from the creative vision of the artist, not a design copied by rote. Of course, if a customer comes in with a design already chosen from a book or photograph, the artist will be happy to oblige, and there will still be a welcome personal touch to the final product.
Early in our discussion, Rios makes sure he brings up the subject of cleanliness and proper procedure. "Everyone who works here, from me to the artists to the receptionist at the front desk, is Blood-Borne Pathogen Certified, and CPR Certified," he says. When I mention he is the first tattoo parlor owner I've interviewed during this promotion to bring up the subject of safety, his eyes widen. He shakes his head. Jesus Rios and his crew are proud to go the extra mile to do things right. "Good comes from good," he observes, growing philosophical. "Bad comes from bad." Thanks to the extra effort at East Providence Tattoo, the vibe here is all good.
East Providence Tattoo also does piercing. They are the local sponsor of The Rhode Island Tattoo Expo, May 10-12.

They are everywhere. Over the last few years, Hookah bars have seemed to pop up on every corner in every metropolis. For example, in Providence there are more than a half-dozen, plus another dozen everyday bars offering hookahs. Not bad for a city with only three Starbucks!
If you went just anywhere and puffed on a hookah you may not understand the appeal. Well, chances are you found yourself at the weekend hot spot partaking in what you assume to be authentic hookah. It was not until recently, when visiting Zenobia on Meeting Street in Providence that I learned the truth about Hookahs.
The setting at Zenobia is low key, relaxed. Everything you need and nothing you don't. That is the motif of this fine establishment. Priding themselves on their reputation as a true Middle Eastern fashion Hookah bar.
Focusing on what the Hookah experience is all about Zenobia does not any corners. First Zenobia offers hand crafted Syrian Hookahs. The right apparatus is important in order to taste the full flavor of the tobacco. Most so called Hookah establishments use small, generic hookahs to save a buck.
On to tobacco... Zenobia is one of the few establishments around that uses premium tobacco. Again, most imitators use low-grade, cheap tobacco. This cut corner can cause the smoker to experience headaches. It also detracts from the taste and does not burn nearly as long.
When it comes to flavor, Zenobia leads the pack. After all, it is all about the flavor. Offering over 50 flavors, it is no wonder Zenobia often receive five stars reviews. Mix and match or try one of their famous tastes such as "fuzzy wuzzy" or "blue mist".
Zenobia does not serve alcohol. Traditional Hookah bars are a place to socialize. Meet, greet and be merry. In fact, in the Middle East, Hookah bars are quite similar to our American coffee houses. Zenobia does offer a fine menu of coffees and teas. Patrons may also order a tapas selection or a traditional Middle Eastern dish.

It's tough buying local when you're looking for toys, textiles, or anything else once manufactured in New England and moved overseas. The happy exception to this rule is Sweet Lorraine's Candy Shop in Barrington, Rhode Island, whose wonderful variety and high quality are mostly due to the excellence of our native confectioners. According to owner Bob Sullivan, the emphasis on local product was not intentional, at least at first. It just so happens, most of the best candy makers in the country call Rhode Island home. The Honor Roll includes: Rudy Hauser of Westerly, Garrison Confections of Central Falls, and Sweenor’s of Wakefield, the biggest Chocolatier in the state.
Sweet Lorraine's opened 4 years ago, ending the five-year candy drought the town of Barrington had experienced. The layout of the Shop is bright and pleasing to the eye. Also pleasing to the eye are the neat and inviting displays of chocolate, fudge, chocolate-covered cherries, peanut brittle, all designed to satisfy the most demanding sweet tooth. Another important point, according to Mr. Sullivan, is that the chocolates are manufactured in a nut-free environment, a health precaution not always taken by other merchants.
Reliance on local suppliers extends to the packaging. Boxes and bags are obtained from Morris Co. and Union Paper, respectively, both Rhode Island companies.
When the time comes to make a Valentine's Day purchase of sweets for the Sweetheart, chocolates for the anniversary, or just a box of chocolate-covered cherries for an evening at home watching romantic movies, buying quality and local go hand-in-hand at Sweet Lorraine's.
