By Evan McKay Back in 1995, a much venerated next generation console debuted...the Sony Playstation. Sony, the electronic juggernaut, was at the time ready to move past discmans and really kick consumer electronics into high gear with that sweet grey (and super loud) rectangle. The launch titles were solid and new, but also very weird! Take the terrible Street Fighter: The Movie: THE GAME (lolz) and at the other end, Battle Arena Toshinden, which RULED and put a great spin on the newly emerging 3D fighter. To fill out the launch assortment, Sony gave us a rather middling sample of titles somewhere in between those extremes, such as Air Combat, Jumping Flash!, and the timeless classic Ridge Racer! Back then, I was a little baby nOOb at the tender age of 11...The world was so sweet and innocent and all that mattered was that glowing screen and the nasty ass gray controller. I loved playing those games (not street fighter..dear god that was atrocious), and I was so easily enthralled, so hooked, that I spent my days obsessing over them… Will I have a similar experience on 11.15.13 when Sony launches the PS4? Probably not. By Rob Duguay To say Austin, TX rock quartet White Denim are a multi-faceted band is a vast understatement of how versatile of an act they are. A sound ranging from garage rock, blues, psychedelic, experimental and punk really makes this band something else when it comes to this old-school rock & roll revival America is currently experiencing. With their 6th album Corsicana Lemonade currently out, it really shows how far White Denim has come when it comes to song structure and variety while still being able to make you jump out of your seat and act a fool. A couple rockers with a few numbers that make you want to lay back in your seat and relax, Corsicana Lemonade can definitely put you in the right state of mind.
By Chad Hoyle (@chadillacgrilz) Since the turn of the millennium, the prevalence and respect for the documentary film has grown leaps and bounds. Lend it to an evolution of the narratives within the art form, intriguing subjects, or a new-found ease of accessibility, the films are no longer drawn-out yawns in the style of the History Channel or doc pioneer Ken Burns. Instead, many of the best profile true life characters that are so colorful and engaging, fictional characters from the Hollywood brain trust pale in comparison. Some stories push the envelope of belief so far beyond the limits, it's mind blowing that they're coming from a place of truth. Not excluded is the new critically- acclaimed documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, planned for national release in March 2014. The film explores the production of the never-finished Dune, based on the epic sci-fi novel by Frank Hebert and developed by director Alejandro Jodorowski between 1973 and 1983. To assist with his vision, Jodorowsky enlisted the talents of H.R. Giger, Moebius, Salvador Dali, and Orson Welles, resulting in a beautiful yet grossly over budget development phase, and a script that beget a 14-hr film run time. The doc profiles the pitfalls faced, competing visions, and astronomical expenses that doomed the fascinating yet over-ambitious film from completion. AFTER THE JUMP: In anticipation of the release of Jodorowsky's Dune, get caught up with some of the past decade's greatest documentary films, many of which are available through Netflix streaming. Joe Ferro - Ferro@990WBOB.com The guys that put together Beervana have a simple mission; "To enlighten and educate the community for the responsible appreciation of craft beer" and boy do they come through. Held this year at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, Rhode Island. Craft beer festival in my home town?
You had me at hello. Now sometimes these gatherings of beer lovers bring a few things to mind, mostly the people who spend time before pre-gaming just so they can suck down as many 2-ounce samples as they can get their hands on only to find them laying somewhere outside, or inside, the venue hammered, but this wasn't even close to the case here. Beervana was truly a classy learning experience of one of my favorite things in life, beer. By Dan Martin October is nearing an end. We have a great couple shows to close it out as well as a new FREE monthly Live Comedy showcase kicking off this Sunday. More below, we have lots to cover.
By Alicia: The Sexual Intellectual Raw Sex Session #4 I will be the first one to admit...I LOVE boobs. I think psychologically, we all do. As it is a close link to our childhood, and for most of us, what gave us our nutrients after birth. On Episode #117 of The Franchise there was a brief discussion about Breast Cancer in honor of Boobstock, a personal heartfelt tribute to Breast Cancer survivors and a farewell to the show that got Raw Sex started... By Rob Duguay When a great singer-songwriter puts out one fantastic album, it's usually the norm and most of the time it's expected. When the same singer-songwriter puts out two amazing albums on the same day, then that's taking things up to another level. Brooklyn bred musician Kevin Devine has released two magnum opuses with Bulldozer & Bubblegum, with Bulldozer being his 7th solo album while Bubblegum is a collaboration between Kevin and his touring band The Goddamn Band. Similar records with contrasts in style, Bulldozer shows Kevin at his intimately poetic best while Bubblegum is a total Nirvana-esque rocker that is one of the most energetic albums of the year. Kevin Devine is such a consistently prolific musician, I can't same a single song of his that hasn't floored me and both Bulldozer & Bubblegum prove to be his best output yet.
