After stepping into The Met on a recent Friday afternoon, (at the Hope Artist Village Complex in Pawtucket) to meet co-owner Rich Lupo, it is easy to see why this has become a favored venue for both regional and national/international musicians. The house is equipped with a powerful JBL sound system to suit any genre, and an array of stage lighting sets the performance mood. Dressing rooms (yes, real dressing rooms, with a private bathrooms and refrigerators) are located directly in back of the stage, creating a true backstage environment. "I remember spending agonizing hours going back and forth with Emerson [Torrey] about just a few feet of the 'perfect' stage depth." Mr. Lupo pondered as he stood looking out from his own stage right. Because of this attention to detail, The Met is suited to host international talents such as, The Joy Formidable to local hero and WBOB personality Kris Hansen, and his Viking Jesus CD release party. In between the national acts, the club has watched the growth of local success stories like Deer Tick and Joe Fletcher and The Wrong Reasons, while also maintaining a weekly jam session on Sunday evenings. "I'm seeing some of the best bands on the local scene in a long time." reflects Rich... "I know that the audience is spread out demographically depending on the type of music . Last night we had Robbie Krieger (legendary guitarist for The Doors) with an all-star band, and we had folks from 20 to their 60's enjoying a great show. I still love seeing that". Mr. Lupo also took care to mention the team of his promotions and talent buying; Heartbreak Hits' Jack and Kathy Reich, along with Mike Delehanty particularly focusing on The Met. You can see that this is a solid and experienced partnership as co-owner (and the wife of Mr.Lupo), Sarah (herself a local songstress with a recent CD release) arrives to see to that evening's performer's hospitality is taken care of and that the load in and set up go on without a hitch. Although "a hitch" is unlikely given the professional house sound management on hand. Most of you know Rich Lupo as the owner of Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, which is a small theater, too large to accommodate smaller drawing acts. The Met is a way for him to get a piece of the barband atmosphere of the original.
For Sharon Marie Melesko, co-owner of Wayland Square Power Yoga, the practice of Yoga is a spiritual experience, each session is one more step on a continuous life journey. This is a journey that she takes quite seriously. "Our Yoga is Coffee Black, Straight Up," she says. No music, gimmicks, no distractions. "We concentrate on the basics." "Our Yoga is Coffee Black, Straight Up" - Sharon Marie Malesko And you can't get more basic than breathing: "Breath is Life-Force," Sharon explains. "Breathing is the fundamental constant of Yoga." It's not bending yourself into a strange position with eyes closed, trying your best to remain upright? Nope, not even close. Yoga is also not just something to do because it's trendy, or because you want to lose weight. What we're talking about here is a 5000-year-old Practice (old as human civilization, in other words), that can heal both physical and mental suffering. Yoga therapy enabled Sharon to overcome severe pain during a debilitating physical illness. This experience led to her decision to go into business with her husband Robert, and begin teaching full-time. The studio offers formal classes, as well as individual instruction. The philosophy here is that there is a Yoga experience for everybody. Stop by Wayland Square for a visit. Sharon will be happy to discuss life-experiences, quote Hindu proverbs (Ask her to tell you the one about going around the mountain), and explain how the world operates on fear. She will also explain how it is possible to overcome that fear with a good dose of no-nonsense Yoga. And how to have fun doing it, while the Yoga heals your mind, body, and soul. Have you ever had a situation where you need to call a company to discuss a product or service, and you can't get through to the person in charge, the only person who has the information you need isn't there, or the person you spoke to last time doesn't remember you exist when you call back ten minutes later for a little more information? You're not alone. Personal service these days isn't what it used to be. At P & J Florists, the aforementioned situation will never occur. "When I go on vacation, the business is closed," says owner David Quadros, speaking emphatically. He is stating a simple fact: Besides a few part-time assistants, he is the owner and sole employee. If the Open sign is on the door, he is either seated behind the counter, ready to greet the next customer with a warm smile; or he is busy in his work area, assembling one of the beautiful and complex flower arrangements that are his pride and joy. Mr. Quadros has owned his shop for 22 years. He lives by a philosophy of quality personal service that has gone missing in many other businesses. It is this lifelong habit of taking a personal interest in everything done at P&J Florist that allows him to thrive in both good times and bad. The difference in quality resulting from this old-fashioned, hands-on approach is obvious, especially in regard to his many unique flower arrangements. The first thing a customer notices when they visit All About Pets (1800 Post Road, Warwick, RI) is the big sign in the window that reads: "Holistic." The word rings a faint bell, but... "Holistic means everything used in our Grooming Process is All Natural," says owner Denise Rachiele, seated behind the front counter. "No dyes, nothing chemical or artificial. Also, we don't cage dry." I ask what that means: "Cage Drying means the dogs are put in a cage with heat dryers directed at them," she explains. I don't like the sound of it. Neither does Denise. "We hand dry with blow-dryers," she says. It's obvious this woman loves dogs- including the big, friendly fellow who keeps her company behind the counter, charming customers with her wagging tail. Denise treats her puppy patrons like old friends. There is also a frolicsome little puppy with seven "Do not pet" signs around its enclosure (Too much petting can be stressful to a young pup). Yes, it's obvious the owner loves her dogs... "Dogs are gross," she says. Wait! Time out! Aren't dogs cute, cuddly, loyal, helpful, and don't you really want to own one? Well, yes, but... "They roll in really disgusting things," Denise points out. And luckily they do. There is an iguana giving me a cranky look, goldfish, and a few other critters for sale in the shop, but the Main Event at All About Pets is Dog Grooming. Dog Grooming done with special care. By the time our interview concluded, it was obvious to me that the official motto for Denise and the rest of her crew here at All About Pets: We take special care.
