Here and there I get my hands on some fine brews from one of my favorite breweries, Monkish Brewing Company out of Torrance, CA.
I have had about a dozen or so different IPAs and DIPAs from them, along with some collaboration beers they've done and all have been pretty incredible. All of them have had that good Monkish base with minor tweaks and ingredients to keep me coming back for more
.Most recent I got my grubby mits on Monktiki Ekahi (Ekahi means "one" in Hawaiian apparently from a quick Google search). This double IPA is brewed with lactose, coconut, orange, pineapple, vanilla and nutmeg. I know sounds funky right. Well you wouldn't be wrong. I cracked open a can and poured a heaping helping into one of my fine Monkish teku glasses, #ProperGlassware. On the nose you definitely get all the above ingredients but mostly the nutmeg stands strong so I was a little intimidated. I said to myself "well it is a Monkish. How bad can it be?" and dove in.
Now I'm not going to lie here. My first sip was somewhere between drain pour and a chug video for one of my beer groups to dispose of it as quickly as possible and move on to something else.
A. I VERY rarely drain pour something
B. I wasn't drunk enough yet for chug videos so I powered on.
As it warmed slightly the true identity of this beer started to come out and I was whisked away to a tropic island, banging back one too many rum punches and buying over priced beaded necklaces from the locals on the beach while staring at the bikini girls or maybe that's what I needed to tell myself to power though. Meh. Whatever. Don't judge me.
All kidding aside that's what struck me. The pineapple and orange poked their head out along with a slight but present coconut with a heavy dash of nutmeg on top. Just the way I like my rum punch. Half way though my can I was very much enjoying it. Had it not been a rainy 45 degree day I think this would be a "sit in the yard on a warm sunny day and get rekt" type of brew.
At 8.5% abv and with the depth of flavors on this one I wouldn't really advise it. Overall this beer did end up bringing me to a warm far away place on a dreary winter day, even if only in my mind.
I didn't hate it but I could only have one.
