It's the second most wonderful time of the year in all of major league baseball. It's the MLB Trade Deadline and there were a lot of names that were traded all over the place as some teams went the fire sale route while others tried to gather pieces for an October run.
When you are traded to a new team, players sometimes feel that they need to make an impact to show that they were worth trading for. Sometimes things work out, other times they don’t.

So I'm supposed to feel better because the inevitable has happened up at Fenway Park. No more suspense,no more wondering, no more holding on to a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, things would turn out different. John Lester would remain a member of the Red Sox. Instead, he has been dealt to the Oakland A's for Yoenis Cespedes. A two time world series champion traded for a two time home run derby champion...I don't feel anybetter! Pal (Pal@990WBOB.com)
The deal all of Boston was waiting to happen finally did. The Red Sox on trade deadline day morning have traded their ace and work horse Jon Lester along with slugger Johnny Gomes to Oakland. In return the Athletics sent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Almost a perfect exchange for both clubs based on the different directions each are headed. It will be a celebration of both the past and present. That’s the agenda this weekend in Canton, Ohio, birthplace of the NFL. First, the past is saluted with the Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony on Saturday at 7:00 PM ET (NFL Network and ESPN). History will be at the forefront as the Hall of Fame class of 2014 is inducted, sporting their new gold Hall jackets in front of returning Hall of Famers and thousands of fans. “This is a wonderfully spectacular tradition, one of the greatest in all of sports,” says Hall of Fame president DAVID BAKER. “Nowhere can fans see so many of the greatest heroes of the game in one place at one time. There’s no better way to kick off the NFL’s 95th season.” It's been sometime since the Red Sox have been sellers at the MLB trade deadline. This season not only is there a sale in Boston but everything must go.
Tuesday on the WBOB Sports LIVE Podcast Psycho Sports new host Johnny Sunchips welcomed former Sox closer Ken Ryan to breakdown exactly what s going on behind the curtain at Fenway. Two Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receivers – CRIS CARTER and MICHAEL IRVIN – have been selected to serve as alumni captains for the 2015 Pro Bowl, the NFL announced today. Continuing the significantly revised Pro Bowl format that debuted with the 2014 Pro Bowl, Carter and Irvin will have final say over Pro Bowl Draft decisions. Each legend will be assisted in the Draft process by two active player captains and one NFL.com fantasy football champion, who will earn their spot as part of Lenovo’s Fantasy Coach of the Year platform. “Being voted to the Pro Bowl was always a tremendous honor for me,” says Carter, who now serves as an NFL studio analyst for ESPN. “Last year, players really seemed to be excited about the new rules and the Pro Bowl Draft format. I’m excited to be a part of it this year.” Kevin Aherne (@KAherne17)
With the draft behind us, and the the big ticket free agents off the market, an outline for the upcoming 2014-15 NBA season has begun to take shape. The Celtics' roster now runs eighteen men deep, and though that typically means that the squad is set, the Celtics now have more questions than answers. Here are 5 important questions for Celtics GM Danny Ainge: Miami Marlins reliever Steve Cishek and New York Mets starter Jacob deGrom have been named co-National League Players of the Week for the period ending July 27th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
David Ortiz continues to flip bats, jog around the bases, dump all over the concept of good sportsmanship and live a never-ending dream in Boston devoid of all criticism and repercussions. Michael Parente (@michaelparente) It’s a shame we still don’t get it, no matter how many times the bat-flipping, phone-smashing, selfish, showboating jerk continues to wipe his ass with the integrity of Major League Baseball (whatever’s left of it).
Shortly after Tampa Rays’ pitcher Chris Archer called out David Ortiz for flipping his bat and hot-dogging it around the bases Sunday following a three-run home run in the first inning of Boston’s 3-2 victory, the card-carrying members of the Big Papi Fan Club – a.k.a. the soft-baked Boston media – came rushing to Ortiz’s defense. |
