Hey everybody, it’s that time of the week for your Weekly PawSox update on 990WBOB. As we enter the hot, muggy days of summer, one thing is for certain that the only thing hotter than the temperatures are your Pawtucket Red Sox.
Where They Stand
As it stands, the PawSox are still at top of the IL North with an impressive 50-29 record, 9 games ahead of the Leigh High Valley IronPigs. This is the third consecutive year they have 50 wins before the All-Star break. They’re 9-1 in their last 10 games, including a 6-game winning streak. During their 8-game road trip in Ohio, they went 7-1. The only loss was against the Toledo Mud Hens.
Just the Stats Jack
At the plate, OF Bryce Brentz leads the team in HRs (15), RBIs (51), total bases (134), and is tied with fellow OF Jeremy Hazelbaker in strikeouts (69). Hazelbaker also leads the team with stolen bases (21). INF Drew Sutton leads the teams in walks with (36). OF Jackie Bradley Jr. continues to lead the team in batting average (.313), slugging (.531), and OPS (.936) while OF Mitch Maier leads the team in OBP (.431).
On the mound, there are new faces on the leader board with the call up of Allen Webster to Boston. RHP Terry Doyle leads all starters in wins (5) and innings pitched (74.0). RHP Steven Wright leads the team in walks (42) and strikeouts (61) and is tied with RHP Ruby De La Rosa for games started (14 apiece). De La Rosa leads the team in opponent batting average (.179). Up and coming youngster RHP Brandon Workman leads the starters in ERA (2.16) and LHP Chris Hernandez leads the team in game played (17).
In the bullpen, Ryan Rowland-Smith is rejoined with fellow 5-game winner Pedro Beato to lead the PawSox bullpen. However in Pedro’s absence, Rowland-Smith solidified himself as the top relief pitcher. To go with his 5 wins, Rowland-Smith leads relievers in ERA (1.03) and innings pitched (43.2). Fellow relief pitcher Jose De La Torre leads the bullpen in opponent batting average (.157) and is tied with CP Anthony Carter in strikeouts (42). Carter also leads the bullpen in games played (29) and saves (12).
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
With the injury bug plaguing Boston, many of the PawSox have been called up in hopes of stopping the bleeding. Most notable was a move last Tuesday when Boston optioned 3B Will Middlebrooks back down to Pawtucket.
6/20: Called up RHP Jeremy Kehrt to Pawtucket from Portland Double-A. Received RHP Clayton Mortensen from Boston on rehab assignment
6/21: Placed DH Mark Hamilton in the Gulf Coast Red Sox on rehab assignment.
6/22: Sent SP Allen Webster to Boston and received RP Pedro Beato from Boston. Sent RHP Jeremy Kehrt down to Portland.
6/25: Sent up 1B Brandon Snyder and RP Pedro Beato to Boston and received 3B Will Middlebrooks from Boston
6/26: Received Pedro Beato from Boston
Bring on the RailRiders
After finishing up with the Toledo MudHens, the PawSox will host a 5-game series with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Railriders from 6/29-7/3. It will be their first match-up against the Railriders at McCoy this season. Last year, the PawSox were 5-3 against the Railriders, then Yankees, as the home team at McCoy (The Railriders did not have a home field to play at last year).
