Christian Martinelli Free agency is an exciting time of the year. Players that used to be on your favorite team go somewhere else, and new players come to your favorite team by choice. It’s a wild period of time that can turnmake friends into enemies, and stars into snakes. The Boston Celtics need to make some moves now that Kyrie Irving is all but gone, as is Al Horford, and even Aron Baynes. The Celtics’ roster look very average at best. The good news for Celtics fans is that Kemba Walker to Boston is all but a done deal, and should get done by Tuesday at the latest. Kemba Walker coming to the Celtics pretty much solidifies Terry Rozier no longer being a Celtic, could mean the same for a guy like Marcus Morris too. Who are some players that Boston should grab in free agency? Brook Lopez- 7’0" 270 lbs - 81 games - 12.5 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.2 BPG, 36.5 3P% Brook Lopez had a fantastic season in 2018-19, and showed what a mistake the Lakers made letting him go. He’s a great rim protector, and stretches the floor as a big man too. He would be a very significant upgrade from Aron Baynes if he chooses Boston as his destination, and his veteran leadership would be valuable as well. Taj Gibson - 6’9" 232 lbs - 70 games - 10.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 0.6 BPG Gibson has been a solid big man in the NBA for a long time, and he’s brought decent production everywhere he’s gone. Gibson would not be very expensive to pick up due to his age, and really would only be a role player, but he’s the type of tough defensive player you need to come off the bench if you want to be successful. Maybe not a very popular free agent, but Gibsonwould be a great one for any team. Danny Green- 6’6" 215lbs- 80 games- 10.3 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 45.5% 3P% The Celtics are in need of some shooting, and Danny Green is one heck of a shooter. The world champion had a very up and down playoff stretch, but when it mattered most he was always there to hit the big shot. He’s a clutch performer that has been around for a long time, and is a great locker room guy. He will be a leader for the younger guys to follow, and a very good player to bring a spark off the bench. Kyle O’Quinn- 6’10" 250 lbs- 45 games- 3.5 PPG- 2.6 RPG- 0.6 BPG Kyle O’Quinn would not be a sexy pick up. But although the numbers look dismal he’s much more than just a roster filler. O’Quinn put up those numbers only playing 45 games and eight minutes per game last season. He is still young (29), and is a very solid guy off the bench when given the chance. He works hard on the boards, and for 2-3 million a year would be very worth it for Boston. Kevon Looney- 6’10" 220 lbs- 80 games- 6.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 62.5 FG% Talk about a guy that is still young, but has the experience of a veteran, that’s Kevon Looney. Looney is not a star, but he’s a very solid player. On the Warriors you would’ve never expected him to put up big numbers, and he didn’t, but he was a very important cog to their success over the last four seasons. He’d serve as an upgrade from Aron Baynes. Isaiah Thomas- 5’9" 190 lbs- 12 games- 8.1 PPG, 1.9 APG, 0.4 SPG Yes, you read that right. Whether it’s this year or the next I believe Isaiah Thomas will be making a return to Boston, the place he loves with all his heart. We all know how Isaiah‘s career has gone downhill since he suffered that hip injury, but maybe coming back to his favorite environment and playing for his favorite team would help him turn his career back around. No one would expect the season that he averaged 28 points a game from him, but as a backup point guard behind Kemba he could be a great addition to the squad. The King of the Fourth could make his return to his throne. Only a few days ago it seemed as though the Celtics had screwed themselves out of Kyrie and Al Horford, and that no stars were going to be coming their way. Then, out of nowhere, we heard that Kemba Walker will be a Boston Celtic. The Celtics will still need some depth after losing three starters, but the talent is out there and the Celtics have the money to spend. There’s no excuse why two or three of these players, or players just like them, shouldn’t be on the Celtics roster after the free agency period ends. The Celtics should be a top team in the NBA, and what they do in these next few weeks will determine if they reach their potential. Read More 990WBOB |
