On June 10th 990WBOB and Sprout CoWorking launched a new live radio podcast focusing on issues that are important to people and businesses in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.  The new show What's There Now  broadcasting live from Sprout CoWorking in the Rising Sun Mills in historic Olneyville and will highlight people, businesses, community news, arts and entertainment with a look towards the history of the area and its future.   

The show is hosted by renowned New England thespian Terry Shea along with executive producer, business consultant, author and artist Dave Lubelczyk. "The show is a look into the makeup of Rhode Island neighborhoods, rich with history and now full of exciting new happenings" says Lubelczyk. 

What's There Now is also hosted by Gaelen Abt Known as The Style Sherpa, Gaelen is a Wardrobe ReDesigner and Intuitive Energy Reader focusing her powers on style and all things creative and quirky! “I’m excited to shine a light on the lesser-known things that make RI so frickin cool!” says Abt.  Rounding out the cast is  John Kevorkian  a partner in Sprout CoWorking.  He formerly worked nationally as a technology company executive and business advisor and is probably best known for cofounding Chicago’s Redhead Piano Bar. Kevorkian lends his legendary humor and wit to the panel.

Sprout CoWorking and 990WBOB will team up to benefit our four-legged friends Friday, April 23 with “Movie Night” featuring the sports film The Sandlot at Sprout CoWorking, located at 166 Valley St., Providence. 

All proceeds raised will be donated directly to We’re Here For The Dogs, a nonprofit organization helping dogs and cats locally. “Movie Night” is sponsored by Lil’ Rhody Storage, Fairview Gardens, and Bonetown Burgers & BBQ, who will be on site selling delicious items from its menu. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at 990WBOB.com or by emailing Adam@SproutCoWorking.com

About The Rhode Island Food Bank
Since 1982, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank has been distributing millions of pounds of food to those in need of assistance through our network of member agencies across the state.

Who the Food Bank Serves

• 33% are under the age of 18
• 20% are over the age of 60
• 44% of households have one or more employed adults
• 70% report choosing between paying for food or utilities
• 62% report choosing between paying for food or rent
• 22% have a family member in poor health

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributes food to people in need through a statewide network of 160 member agencies. These agencies include food pantries, meal sites, shelters, youth programs and senior centers. Each month, 59,000 struggling Rhode Islanders receive food assistance at these agencies. One in three served is a child under the age of 18, and one in five is over the age of 60.
The Food Bank solicits food donations from the public and from the food industry, including supermarkets, food manufacturers and growers. To keep up with the high demand for food assistance, the Food Bank also purchases food at a low cost from wholesalers. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 9.2 million pounds of food.

The event, which runs from 8 pm to 11 pm (EST), will feature celebrity cameos and listener call-ins aimed at saying the F-word as often as possible, and for good reason -- every F-Bomb equals a two dollar donation to the veteran's charity, Devil Dog USA Inc, which seeks to help veterans in need who have returned from active duty whom may need assistance such as housing.

Devil Dog USA Inc. understands that the word Devil Dog can be an intimidating term. As the founders of Devil Dog USA Inc. we would like to take the time to explain our moniker.The roots of the word Devil Dog originated in Belleau Wood (1918), when the Germans referred to the United States Marine Forces as “Teufel Hunden”. The Marines proudly took up this moniker as they gallantly defended their nation against all enemies foreign or domestic. As a term of endearment the Marine Corps used the English bulldog to symbolize the term.

The English bulldog is strong, courageous,dignified, loyal and aggressive when provoked. Likewise, Veterans share these similar characteristics in and out of active duty service. At the end of active service many Veterans find themselves alone in a community that does not understand them. Many Veterans are unaware or do not apply to the benefits that are afforded to them or there is a lack of benefits. This in turn can lead to homelessness; decline in health, and eventually to a lonely death. Veterans, like the bulldog, when provided with adequate housing, the opportunity to be physically active through adaptive sports, given the opportunity to serve again through community service, and attainment of benefits only builds on a Veteran’s resiliency. Once this is established a Veteran can focus on employment, higher education, and rejoin their community with pride and purpose. DD USA Inc. pledges to fight for Veteran’s rights, just like the Marines did at Belleau Woods. Whether it is federal, state, city or county DD USA Inc. will stand tall and not rest until every Veteran is housed, properly clothed, employed, educated and receiving their hard earned benefits.

This is why we happily accept the term Devil Dog as our moniker.

The total money raised for the event had been just shy of the goal for a period of time, but a gracious pizza donation from Cranston's Cucina Rustica reinvigorated the WBOB volunteers, along with a generous cash donation from owner Gina Musto and executive chef Brian Nadeau. 

"It was amazing to us to see how many individuals chipped in a few dollars at a time to help such a worthwhile cause," said WBOB Director of Content Kevin Aherne. "It really does take the efforts of a community to affect change."

Honor Courage Commitment, Inc. started the #22KILL movement in 2013 after learning about the staggering statistic that an average of 22 veterans are killed by suicide every day. Honor Courage Commitment, Inc. (HCC) committed to researching and understanding the genesis of this epidemic, and educating the general public on the issue. #22KILL was a platform to raise awareness not just towards veteran suicide, but also to the mental health issues that can lead to suicide. These issues stem primarily from conditions such as PTS and TBI, and struggles of transitioning out of the military.

The solution is veteran empowerment.
