Once every 4 Years, today occurs.  Last year, today would have been March 1... but this year today is tomorrow.

The Earth orbits the moon every 365.25 days (actually: 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 16 seconds).  So, in order to create a truly annual calendar, an adjustment was required.

But Why February 29?

As part of  Julian reform, the day following the Terminalia (February 23) was doubled, forming the "bis sextum"—literally 'double sixth."

Since February 24 was 'the sixth day before the Kalends of March' using Roman inclusive counting (March 1 was the 'first day'). Although exceptions exist, the first day of the bis sextum (February 24) was usually regarded as the intercalated or "bissextile" day since the third century.

February 29 came to be regarded as the leap day when the Roman system of numbering days was replaced by sequential numbering in the late Middle Ages.

If you followed that garble, good.  if not, it basically says "Romans had some weird social laws that carried over to more modern times."

Leap Day Traditions
  • (US) National Rare Disease Day
  • (UK/IRL) It is the only acceptable day for a woman to propose marriage to a man.  Historically, In upper-class societies, if the man declines, he must then purchase 12 pairs of gloves for the woman... to hide the woman's embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.
  • (GREECE) It is considered bad luck to wed on Leap Day

Don't Be Crude

I feel like a curmudgeon... but I can recall being sixteen, pulling into a gas station with my beat-up ride, and filling my tank for $15.00.  The price for one U.S. Gallon of gasoline was 96 Cents.

This was short-lived though, as soon, prices surpassed the dollar mark.  Climbing steadily to around 2 bucks just in time for Y2K. However, times were good... The Dow was up, DotComs were booming, and we couldn't buy Suburbans and Hummers fast enough.

Picture

Today, gas prices have climbed to nearly 4 American Dollars per gallon.  This rising cost of oil is affecting much more than our commute to work.  Heating oil costs are nearly on par with gasoline prices, and although we are experiencing an unusually mild winter, the average cost of heating a home continues to rise.

It extends even further too... There are secondary and tertiary effects to the rising cost of energy.  Most electricity is still produced from fossil fuels, and most commerce relies on various oil based fuels for transportation.  Groceries, raw materials, and all other consumer goods have seen sharp price increases due to this inflation.
Picture
This increase is not temporary.  In fact, it will likely get much worse before it gets better.  Just ask Dennis, Mac, and Charlie:

We do overlook one thing... As Americans we have taken oil prices for granted.  When compared to the rest of the world, we pay far less than most other industrialized nations.

So WBOB-Land... tell me what you think.  How do we proceed from here?  Do we just grin and bear it? raise hell? fight more Middle Eastern wars and take their fuel?

Rob's Album of The Week: Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker & Yim Yames’ New Multitudes

Through unrecorded written lyrics by the iconic Woody Guthrie, Son Volt’s Jay Farrar, Centro-matic’s Will Johnson, Varnaline’s Anders Parker and My Morning Jacket’s Yim Yames (pronounced Jim James) have come together to put out an album in tribute and celebration of what would have been Guthrie’s 100th birthday on June 14th called New Multitudes. Chosen by Guthrie’s daughter Nora to add instrumentation to her father’s lyrics, Farrar, Johnson, Parker and Yames focused on the lyrics Guthrie wrote during his early songwriting years when he was based in Los Angeles during the Great Depression.

Nora originally gave Farrar the opportunity to choose which lyrics he wanted to write music to through the archives of The Woody Guthrie Foundation located on West 57th Street in New York City. After looking through over 3,000 handwritten lyrics, Farrar chose to write music from the period from when Guthrie moved from his home state of Oklahoma with thousands of others to the West Coast in search of jobs during the infamous dust bowl.

A fantastic album that is as American as apple pie, it kicks off with the track “Hoping Machine” that has Farrar starting the song with the lyrics “Don’t let anything knock your props out from under you, always keep your mind clear, let your plans come out of mistakes.....” The opus also features steady piano keys and harmonious chords alternating between the acoustic and electric guitar riffs.

Other tracks I enjoy are “My Revolutionary Mind”, which features Yames singing about the agony of loneliness and the times when all you want is to hold somebody close, “Old L.A.” that has Parker singing about Guthrie’s time in the City of Angels, “Changing World” rings as true today as when Guthrie wrote the lyrics back in the late 30s, “Angel’s Blues” is a completely badass track about having a different girlfriend in every city, “VD City” features Johnson’s gritty voice accented by a down and dirty electric guitar that definitely makes me think that Neil Young could have written a similar song, and yes VD stands for exactly what you’re thinking.

A week after the release of New Multitudes on February 28th, Farrar, Johnson, Parker & Yames will be embarking on a mini tour of the continental United States starting at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on March 6h and ending at The Paradise Rock Club in Boston on March 16th, a night I’m sure that any New England fan won’t want to miss.

If you love Woody Guthrie along with loving some of the current folk-rock music that’s been produced over the past few years, why not kill two birds with one stone and grab a copy of New Multitudes? It’s a one of a kind record that’s as amazing as the man who wrote the lyrics.

Ash-Holes

If you have been wondering why half of the people on the streets seem to have missed a spot in their daily hygienic rituals, you must not be Catholic. Today is Ash Wednesday, a significant day in the Holy Calender that marks the beginning of Lent.

Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults.

An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job.  Job says to God: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. The other eye wandereth of its own accord. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

Just prior to the New Testament period, the rebels fighting for Jewish independence, the Maccabees, prepared for battle using ashes: "That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes."

Ash Wednesday marks the start of a 43-day period which is an allusion to the separation of Jesus in the desert to fast and pray. During this time he was tempted. Matthew, Mark, and Luke, while not specifically instituted in the Bible text, the  period of repentance is also analogous to the 40 days during which Moses repented and fasted in response to the making of the Golden calf. In Victorian England, theatres refrained from presenting costumed shows on Ash Wednesday, so they provided other entertainments.

So, if you see an ashy pedestrian, know that they are likely a devout christian... or they made a series of questionable decisions yesterday for Mardi Gras.

Kevin's Eleven: What's In A Song?

Have you ever been listening to the radio when a song comes on that instantly reminds you of the movie in which it was featured?  Or see a movie poster, and suddenly have a part of its soundtrack stuck in your head? The  perfect placement of music into movies  requires plenty of skill and attention to detail.  The right song in the right place, however, can make a film.

There are a few ways in which a song will find its way to a movie's story:
  • Character led song (See Ferris Bueller/Twist & Shout)
  • Opening/Closing Credits (See Fortunate Son/Every Vietnam Movie)
  • Plot Apex in Montage format (See Footloose)
Some movies have better song placement than others, so today I would like to acknowledge the 11 best placed songs in movies.  These songs have been so perfectly imbedded into the film, that the two forms of art become forever bonded in our minds.

However, before I begin, there are two important rules incorporated into the list:

* Songs must not be a creation of the movie
   (Ray Parker Jr Clause)
* Must not be performed by a Canadian artist whilst standing on the Bow of a Ship

(Celine Dion Amendment... My List, My rules)

10. Gangsta's Paradise: Coolio

It was the last time that either Coolio or Michelle Pfeiffer were relevant...
