The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island today raised deep concerns about a decision by T.F. Green Airport officials to participate in a Department of Homeland Security field test designed to expand a largely discredited “behavior detection” program that attempts to determine travelers’ motives of “mal-intent” by monitoring their mundane actions.

To the individual(s) responsible for heartlessly vandalizing the imPOSSible Dream playground in Warwick, I hereby dub thee: The Worst Person(s) Alive in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The imPossible Dream Playground is Rhode Island’s first integrated playground. It offers an environment that is play friendly for children of all physical abilities. The playground is filled with swings, slides, see saws, sand boxes, fantasy play houses, miniature golf, an activity center, picnic areas, and accessible rest rooms. That playground was forced to close this week after vandals caused more than $5,000 in damage by overturning structures, destroying benches, smashing windows, and crushing toys. The playground has no video surveillance equipment, and currently, the police have no suspects. Sen. Louis P. DiPalma’s and Rep. Stephen R. Ucci’s ‘Identity Theft Protection Act of 2015’ legislation was signed into Rhode Island law this morning by Governor Gina M. Raimondo during a ceremonial bill signing at the State House.
“We live in a world where so much, if not all, of our personal information floats around in cyberspace, often with completely inadequate protections. This is the reality of our times,” said Senator DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Newport, Little Compton, Tiverton). “The intent of this legislation is to set standards and to protect that vital information from those who wish to do harm or profit from the most personal details of our lives.” |
