Laurie Piatkowski Just as I opened the first can of Captain's Daughter Double IPA, I could smell its grape fruity aroma, cloudy Auburn brown appearance, and white head. I noticed a citrus presence, but heavy butterscotch and toffee flavors clearly stand out. Orange, caramel and light pine aromas round it out with a medium carbonation. Sitting at 8.50 ABV, the taste balances out the overall bitterness of this beer. This is a new brew and from what I have been hearing around the beer cooler, it's has a hard time staying on the shelves. Grey Sail of Rhode Island has brought us a world class beer and I for one intend on buying it again and again. So yes, overall I am in love with this brew -- and I am generally not a big fan of IPA's unless it is summer. That is when I choose to dip my toes into the imperial stouts and extra stout stuff. I recommend pairing this brew -- and the one above it -- Wild Hare pale ale with whatever you've got in that kitchen and roll with it. Don't store this beer in a cellar. Take it fresh as IPA's do not really last long enough for the cellaring process; they have a nasty tendency to develop a wet cardboard taste -- killing the experience altogether. I would take Captain's Daughter Double IPA with me to see the sea side, but don't drink too many, you might fall in!. |
