Amy Schumer Closes Out Newport Summer Series

If you didn’t know what to expect from Amy Schumer’s stand-up comedy, you found out quickly as she greeted the presumably affluent Newport [RI] crowd on Saturday Night. Schumer does not sugar-coat her language. But for the next hour, no one in the sold-out big white tent at the Newport Yachting Center seemed to mind.

It’s no secret that a female comedian who uses vulgar language and taboo topics in their act can often face ridicule. Although, as Schumer points out, it is no different than the material used by many of the more popular male comedians of today. But Schumer does have a way of using words like ‘rape’, ‘fuck’, and ‘cunt’ in a way that makes most people want to laugh instead of cringe, despite her gender. She doesn’t often go for the cheap laugh or a simple shocking statement. She’s a mature woman, talking about mature topics. And as she points out in her act, they are all topics that we can all relate to.

She starts the show like a pro by addressing the crowd and teasing them a little. Being in Newport, it was easy for her to find some “...rich looking mother fuckers” who looked like they “...just got off a yacht”. She also spent a few minutes improvising jokes about the scenery around the stage and venue, including the sign for the Newport Comedy Series hanging behind her which according to Amy looked like “...someone’s niece fucking drew it.” Once she transitioned into rehearsed material she spent the first half of her show doing newer jokes. Many of her topics were related to Hollywood, celebrities, and self-image. The thing about Schumer is she is as quick to make fun of herself as she is to make fun of anyone else. Even going as far as to compare her naked body to “...that shit inside of a lava lamp.”

Part of the way through the show a fireworks display began in a nearby marina. They could clearly be heard and seen from the stage. But it didn’t seem to phase her at all. In fact, it gave her a chance to riff a few more off the cuff jokes without it derailing her act. In fact it showed even more that she is a seasoned professional and that not even a bunch of loud explosions could rattle her.

The second part of her show was material she has performed before and would be familiar to anyone who has seen her TV comedy special. These last 30 minutes consisted mostly of tight, quick zingers about dating and sex with sneaky punchlines delivered almost under her breath. 

She wraps up the show with some audience participation about ‘sex acts’. As she explains, being a comic, she has heard many of the amusing sex acts people have invented over the years like the ‘Dirty Sanchez’ and the ‘Blumpkin’. She opens it up to the crowd to shout out any new ones that she maybe hasn’t heard before. The audience is quick to yell out some new ones like the ‘Chili Dog’ and the ‘Houdini’. And it gives her a chance to riff some more and do more crowd work, which she does well. Though I also saw it as a way to fill more time and get to that one hour mark. Either way the crowd loved it and she kept us laughing the entire show. And everyone was talking about dirty sex acts on the way out.

By the way, a ‘Chili Dog’ is when you shit on a woman’s tits and then titty fuck her.

The ‘Houdini’ is when you bang a girl from behind and quietly let your friend take over banging her without her knowing. Then you go outside and knock on the window and wave to her.**
