MUSIC: 4-Time Grammy Nominee Boney James Brings Smooth Jazz to the Park Theatre on October 179/26/2014 Cranston's Park Theatre is sure to be electric when four-time Grammy nominee jazz saxophonist and songwriter Boney James and special guest, guitar virtuoso, Stanley Jordan take the stage on Friday, October 17. After dazzling the Park in 2013, requests to bring back Jordan were undeniable. Playing instruments since the age of eight, James, born in Massachusetts, dedicated himself to a career in music after graduating from UCLA—touring with bands such as the Isley Brothers for years while learning to play different instruments along the way. A Soul Train Award winner who was named the #3 Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade by Billboard magazine, James stakes claim to four RIAA Certified Gold Records. During the course of his more than 20-year career, James has built a reputation as a one of the most compelling live jazz performers, averaging between 50-80 gigs a year. Throughout the years, stars such as Faith Evans and Al Jarreau have made appearances on James’ albums, touting his passion for music as the driving force behind their collaborations. That passion reverberates throughout James’ newest album, The Beat. Released this past April as the artist’s 14th album, The Beat is a penetrating fusion of jazz, R&B, and Latin rhythms given voice by James’ emotive saxophone playing and guest appearances by trumpet hitman Rick Braun, R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn, and spoken word phenom The Floacist. Earlier this year, The Beat received a Grammy nomination as the Best Pop Instrumental Album. Born in Chicago, Stanley Jordan’s career took flight with immediate commercial success and critical acclaim. Having performed in more than 60 countries—wowing audiences with his advanced touch technique of two-hand tapping—Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight-ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works, Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. Boney James and Stanley Jordan will perform at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17. Tickets are $35 and $45 and available by calling the Park Theatre Box Office at (401) 467-7275 or online at www.ParkTheatreRI.com. The Park Theatre is located at 848 Park Avenue, Cranston, RI 02910.
