Bob Giusti All the way from Bend, Oregon comes the intriguing and haunted wails of the Slaughter Daughters duo comprised of Cece Honey (Cecilia Raheb) on guitar and vocals and Ari Rose (Arianna Celestine) on banjo and vocals. The women tour relentlessly and are currently appearing regionally as they cover the east coast leg of what seems like an endless journey. Musically Slaughter Daughters are immersed in writing and performing intense tales steeped in a unique roots Americana sound they have coined "Gothgrass". Mix the aggressive bluegrass strumming with dark autobiographical lyrics and you get songs like the pleading Hymn in the Wind or the sharp attack of Pistol Bullet that punch you in the gut with an authentic combination of elements of gypsy folk and Appalachian splendor. Because they stay on the road for months at a time and are constantly honing their craft, Celestine and Raheb are an evolving collaboration that refines with time. They still might dish out dark murder ballads in the majority of their sets but there's a new batch of tunes that are seeing the light these days as Celestine explains “Our songs are often influenced by our lives. All of my songs are based off of real people and situations. They are clearly all stories but have real life peppered throughout. And yes, there is a pretty constant theme of killing, sex and Satan but we have recently introduced a new brighter song into the mix. So I think it could be expected that we’ll be adding some happier songs into our set before too long but keeping with our aggressive feel.” Wherever they go next, Slaughter Daughters are looking to keep the show moving (although having already played Alaska, they've covered a fair amount of territory) and keep their energy level intact. At press time Slaughter Daughters will be appearing this evening, May 28th at Beatnik's (433 Park Avenue in Worcester, MA) and on Friday the 30th at Three Sheets in New Haven (372 Elm Street). This is a good time to catch the ladies rise. By seeing one of these shows you'll be able to brag to your friends that you knew them when.
