Now that The Force Awakens has been released for home viewing and people have moved on to excitement over the trailers for Rogue One, it becomes necessary to look back at Episode 7 with some distance between us and the hype & excitement surrounding it. As I discussed recently on Geek Cred, the movie is not perfect -- despite what some people (reviewers included) might want to say. In fact, it has some pretty major issues that are getting heavily glossed over as the hype-train chugs along passing out rose-tinted glasses and nostalgia-goggles to anyone that might want to take a deeper look. With that in mind, let's take a look at 7 (since this is Episode VII!) real problems with The Force Awakens as I make a case to support my B- rating of the movie. Needless to say: SPOILERS! (but COME ON! You should have seen it already!) Geek Cred Episode #18 4/25/16 -The usual geek crew of Deven, John and Spanish Mike is joined by special in-studio guest Black James to discuss the road to Captain America: Civil War as well as how the landscape is may be changed for Marvel studios afterwards. The geeks also talk about Spider-Man: Homecoming and celebrate the 76th anniversary of the Joker! Also, for some reason, Mike hates Game of Thrones.
A Providence start-up is setting its sight more broadly than simply introducing the latest innovative gifting app – it has created a platform that enables people to buy cups of coffee for anyone, anywhere as "random acts of coffee™" that build community and enhance personal relationships with friends, colleagues, employees, business prospects and even strangers.
The new iPhone and Android app is called Nack, and from a functional point-of-view, it provides a fun way for individuals to gift cups of coffee to friends and "suspend coffees" to others by purchasing cups anonymously in advance and leaving them at specific coffee shops for anyone who could use a little cheering. In addition, Nack can store the coffee preferences of co-workers and friends to streamline the daily coffee run. I sit here writing a review for a stupid movie with a dumb gimmick and a shallow story. Unfortunately, I'm struck by a pretty major issue: I think this movie might actually be great. Hardcore Henry sells itself pretty much entirely on the fact that it's shot from a 1st-person point of view in the hopes of making its adrenaline-fueled chase scenes, shoot-outs and parkour-style action set pieces feel even more visceral (hopefully while avoiding giving viewers motion sickness) in the style of popular shooter video games. Similarly, the story that drives our silent protagonist Henry through these action scenes is a revenge/rescue story as simple as you'd find in one of those aforementioned 1st-person shooters. It plays out mostly how you imagine but with some key moments that actually surprised me enough to keep me interested in what was going on. Simple and dumb, right? |
