Surveying the Con for potential Super Powered Singles. These ladies are taken by Soops and Bats, even if they don't know it.
I assure you the above image is not photo shopped in any way. I am just incapable of expressing joy. Also, I crossed my arms and Cat Woman decided to touch me. Why do people insist on touching me? Well its on her now, I have since washed my arm and burned that coat. Why am I so worried about germs you ask? Well it's about time, now we can talk about why we are really here... Comic Con RI 2013! The washed and unwashed masses alike join forces with celebrities that run the gamut from A to Z list. And me, creeping in with guest passes and running amok trolling my own. In this first blog of the Comic Con RI series, I would like to talk to you all about Sci Fi Speed Dating. Go, check the twitter and check out what happens when I leave the house below...

You read correctly above, Sci Fi Speed Dating is a thing. I also had no idea but keep up. It's not just a thing, its a fairly successful thing. I measure that on how many cons it has been to alone. One Hundred and Eighty-one as of this weekend at RI Comic Con in Providence, RI. I attended the Con with Comics Corner's own Moshing Maniac, Kenny Nardozza. We met the man behind the Sweaty Love Connections, Mr. Ryan Glitch. We failed to sign up on time before the inevitable happened and we sat in on the session any way.

Which brings us to meeting Creator and Host of SFSD, Ryan Glitch. Ryan has been doing the Speed Dating at Cons now for the past four years. Before this he has performed stand up with acts like Dane Cook and Gabriel Inglasisas but we will save that for Wednesday. RI was his One Hundred and Eighty First convention. In this writer's opinion I think this kind of thing would translate well to the comic book convention environment. Lots of single people full of child like joy and pure love! What could go wrong?

Kenny and I arrived at the sign up table with plenty of time to find out that more guys signed up than gals. There simply were not enough single ladies at the con to accommodate. The session that I went to, guys VS girls, is what I am calling it, there were 25 single women looking for men. My experiment of throwing Kenny to the wolves would not work. I was going to have to simply observe. This was something that I joked about as we walked around. As I took pictures with con goers, both cosplayers and civilians alike, the women- even if on their own- were in committed relationships. Much like Cat Woman and Wonder Woman above, they were taken and were at the con to show off their costuming skills and spread the nerd love. Another concern for someone like The Moshing Manic is that he is local- Being from the state that the con is in limits you in a way, does it not? If you meet someone from a nearby state and are willing to try long distance, the more power to you. Realistically we are all saving our change for four dollar red bulls and cover variants. And did you see what those celebrities are charging for photos? (Again, all for another installment.)

The age range was also a concern. The sign ups are limited to 18 plus of course, but I am concerned that 21 plus may have been better for guys like Kenny and myself who are in our early 30's. A lot of the people I interviewed afterward were 18 and or 19. Not all, but most. But the appeal of Speed Dating seems to be the mystery. I talked to one happy couple after the panel, an 18 year old girl and 19 year old guy, both from RI and having a great time visiting booths together and chatting. Ryan tells me that there have been 6 marriages, 19 engagements, 102 couples dating seriously, and 2 babies on his watch. A great success rate for the past 4 years.
