Brown University Athletics has begun the construction of a new baseball and softball complex, scheduled to open for the 2017 spring seasons. The $5 million project, entirely donor-funded, will feature synthetic turf playing surfaces at both baseball and softball to replace the existing grass fields at the same location of the Erickson Athletic Complex.

The updated facility will include sunken dugouts, a tension netting backstop system, expanded batting tunnels and bullpens, and new and improved scoreboards and press boxes. In addition, the grandstands at both fields will include chair backs and bench seating, while enhanced sightlines behind the mesh backstop will provide a first-rate viewing experience for fans.

"Thanks to the generosity of Mark Attanasio's '79 lead gift and other donors involved, our programs will have a complex unrivaled in New England and the Ivy League," said head baseball coach Grant Achilles. "Our opportunities for development increase drastically moving forward, and this shows our recruits how committed we are in our pursuit for championship baseball."

The addition of artificial playing surfaces for baseball and softball will bring the total number of synthetic playing surfaces to eight at the Erickson Athletic Complex (Stevenson-Pincince Field, Goldberger Family Field, Meister-Kavan Field, Berylson Family Fields (2), Warner Roof).

"Brown will have one of the top softball stadiums in the Ivy League and in the Northeast region," said head softball coach Katie Flynn. "I am excited for our players to get the chance to play in a state-of-the-art venue with all of the amenities of a true stadium. It will undoubtedly also give us a new edge in recruiting quality student-athletes to College Hill. This is really an exciting time to be a part of the Brown Athletics."

The project is being constructed by R.A.D. Sports and was designed by Gale Associates, Inc. Fans can watch the construction process via the live video feed provided by the Brown University Department of Facilities Management.
