Henry Owens allowed only two hits over seven and a third innings on Tuesday night in Rochester. Unfortunately for the lefthander, one of those hits sparked the only run of the evening as the Red Wings beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 1-0 in front of 3,773 at Frontier Field. Jose Martinez led off the seventh with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a Reynaldo Rodriguez groundout and scored the game’s first run on Danny Ortiz’s sacrifice fly. That run was enough to earn Ervin Santana – facing the PawSox on a rehab for the second time in five days – the win.
The PawSox (38-42) got only five hits against Santana, and were shut out for the third straight time in Rochester – and for the fourth time in their last six games. Jonathan Roof and Luis Martinez each had two hits for Pawtucket. Pat Light relieved Owens with one out in the eighth, after a double and Owens’ fourth strikeout. Light allowed a single to Doug Bernier but retired Aaron Hicks and Argeniz Diaz to keep the deficit at one. Santana – who tossed eight shutout innings without a walk and five strikeouts – was relieved by Michael Tonkin, who sent the PawSox down in the ninth to record his seventh save. Pawtucket closed the month of June with a 12-17 record. The PawSox wrap up the series in Rochester on Wednesday afternoon when they send the knuckleballer Steven Wright (2-2, 2.65) to the mound against lefty Pat Dean (5-7, 3.16) at 1:35. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 1:20 P.M. Pawtucket returns to McCoy Stadium Thursday, July 2nd for a two-game series with Scranton and will have a fireworks spectacular after both ballgames. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. |
