Reggie McKenzie has a formula a system and believes it can work! Wait, where have I heard this before? Reggie's system is similar to Billy Beane's philosophy of money ball where overpaid talent is thrown out the door and replaced with a couple of guys who can give you the same production. Let's break it down by the cuts and signings so far this off season. McKenzie cut and let numerous free agents go to other teams this season. One free agent who had a good season for Oakland last year was Desmond Bryant Defensive Tackle. Bryant had 36 tackles, 8 assists and 4 sacks. Richard Seymour was the other big piece on the offensive line who had a whopping 15 tackles, 1 assist, and 3 sacks. If you tally it up it comes out to 54 tackles, 9 assist, and 7 sacks. Who did the Raiders replace them with Patrick Sims and Vance Walker. Sims had 17 tackles, 5 assists, and 0 sacks. Walker had 32 tackles, 11 assists, and 3 sacks. Its sounds pretty similar to Seymour and Bryant's stats from last season. Difference is Walker and Sims is they are getting paid substantially less. Oakland fans sound very similar, doesn't it?
Now on to the Linebacker corp from last season. There wasn't much production last season so not much to go off but let's try see if we can put the pieces together. Nick Roach will be the centerpiece of the Oakland LB next season. His stats in 2012 were 65 tackles, 11 assists, and 1.5 Sacks. Rolondo McClain who is still on the Raiders organization but could be another cap casualty his stats were 62 tackles, 25 assists, and 1 sack. Also the raiders added Kevin Burnett 109 tackles, 29 assists, and 2.5 sacks. There was not a Raider on the Roster who recorded those stats but they got Burnett for substantially less than any LB on the roster. With that being said Raider fans as one myself have some faith give the GM the Head Coach and Mark Davis a chance. These players you hear about us getting are not the same names your used to, but they do have the same if not better production than the players they have. Rebuilding only works if it is built right and I feel McKenzie using a system not really tried in the NFL but maybe it can succeed. -Stephen "Mr. Combine" Moul |
