By Coach Hayes Johnny Manziel was lauded for being so effective as a redshirt freshman during his 2012 Heisman Trophy season at Texas A&M. Last time I checked however, a redshirt freshman really isn't a freshman at all, but rather, a sophomore. Yes, he played like a stud last year and led Texas A&M to a great season, something that hasn't been done in College Station for a long time. Yes, he was a contributing factor in big wins over Alabama, Texas, and their Cotton bowl win over Oklahoma. So when it comes down to it, Manziel gets credit for being a freshman and winning the Heisman... but he really wasn't a true frosh, his first year redshirt made him a sophmore. Tim Tebow also won the Heisman as a sophomore just a few years earlier, so what's the big deal?
Now, Manziel has the skills to win another one, but he has to step up; both on and off the field. That's right, Johnny Football needs to stop tweeting and doing stupid things... and concentrate on football and maybe even class; because earning a degree is also pretty important. Being a Heisman Trophy winner comes with lots of responsibilities. I'm sure he didn't ask for all this attention, but that's just part of the game. It's all up to him to be able to handle it. Posting a stupid tweet about how he can't wait to get out of College Station isn't the way to keep the fan base on his side. He later deleted the post, but the fact that he put it out there for all to see doesn't help his cause. If he wants to keep a low profile, that's not the way to do it. Another way he has not acted like a Heisman trophy winner is by showing up to a rival schools frat party. That's right, he showed up in Austin to a University of Texas frat party. Manziel was booed and some drunk frat boy tossed a beer bottle in his direction. Oh! and by the way, he was also wearing a bright pink collared shirt. Coach Sumlin needs to sit down his starting quarterback and read him the riot act on how to be a positive role model for his team and the university. So, its time for Johnny Football to put his head down and concentrate on what's important; the 2013 college football season and his studies. As the season gets closer and the hype grows for the top runner to repeat forthe Heisman (which he probably won't win), Manziel needs to screw his head on straight. Put away the twitter, avoid the frat parties at rival schools, and think what is possible for this up coming season. Remember just because Manziel won the Heisman as a redshirt freshman, doesn't mean he can act like one. Man up Johnny Football, and play the game you're so good at. Oh and good luck in your second year in the SEC. You may not like what happens when that target on your back gets bigger with every passing week. |
