PawSox Chris Marrero & Sean O'Sullivan Named to IL All-Star Team

​The Pawtucket Red Sox are pleased to announce that 1B Chris Marrero and RHP Sean O’Sullivan have been selected to the International League All-Star Team for the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game that will be played on Wednesday, July 13 at 7:00 pm at BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte, NC. The 2016 International League All-Star team is made up of 13 elected players who have received the most votes from ballots submitted by league managers & coaches (1/3), media representatives (1/3), and online fan voting (1/3). The elected players are joined by 17 additional All-Stars selected by the IL office. Each of the IL’s 14 clubs will be represented in Charlotte.


The 2016 Triple-A Game marks the 19 th straight year that All-Star teams from the International League and the Pacific Coast League will face each other (the International League leads the series by an 11-7 margin since the game changed to the current IL vs. PCL format). The game will be played the night after the Major League All-Star Game and will be televised live on MLB Network, American forces Network, MiLB.TV, and broadcast on the PawSox Radio Network (920 AM WHJJ the flagship).

1B Chris Marrero, 27, is the PawSox leader in both HR (12) & RBI (34) this season. His 12 homers are tied for 5 th in the International League. He is batting .278 in 73 games playing 32 games at 1B and 19 in the outfield. Chris was signed by the Red Sox last August 15 after being released by the Charlotte Knights earlier in August. He finished the 2015 season with the PawSox and re-signed with the club for 2016. His teammate while in Pawtucket has been his cousin Deven Marrero, the PawSox shortstop. Chris, a Miami native, was originally selected by Washington in the 1 st round (15 th overall selection) in the 2006 June draft. He played in 39 games with the Nationals during parts of 2011 and 2013.

RHP Sean O’Sullivan, 28, is 6-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts for the PawSox this season. He leads the club in victories and his ERA is 8 th best in the International League. He was named IL Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 20-26 going 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in his two starts last week (1 R in 15 IP) beating Lehigh Valley, 4-1 and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 7-3. Sean is in his 11 th season in pro ball and his first in the Red Sox organization after signing as a free agent last December. The San Diego, CA native has pitched in 69 games in the majors with the Angels (2009-10), Royals (2010-11), Padres (2013), Phillies (2014-15), and Red Sox (2016). This May he went 1-0 in 3 games (2 starts) for Boston.

Some other notable PawSox players who have appeared in the Triple-A All-Star Game since the event began in 1988 include:

INF Tim Naehring (1990), 3B Scott Cooper & OF Phil Plantier (1991), RHP Brian Rose (1997), OF Trot Nixon (1998), RHP Tomo Ohka (2000), RHP Bronson Arroyo (2003), OF Brandon Moss (2007), RHP Clay Buchholz (2009, although Buchholz did not attend as he was called-up to Boston), catcher Christian Vazquez (2014, although he did not play), LHP Tommy Layne (2014), LHP Brian Johnson (elected in 2015 but did not attend), and OF Jackie Bradley, Jr. (who did indeed play afterbeing sent back to Pawtucket from Boston in time for the game).
