The summer heat is closing in on us as we get closer to the midpoint of the Triple-A International League 2013 season. Already things are looking high for the Pawtucket Red Sox, coming off a roadtrip where they went 5-3. now they come back to McCoy for another 8 game series. And greeting them at McCoy are another division foe: the Syracuse Chiefs.

For those who do not know, the Chiefs are the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. From May 31st and into June 4th both teams will be matching up at McCoy in their first 4-game series of the season.

Game 1 kicked things off with a bang. Temperatures were scorching in the mid-80s before the game's first pitch. But when the weather heats up, it only means one thing: time for the long balls. Both teams combined for 17 runs on 27 hits as the PawSox took the first game in 12 innings by a score of 9-8. The winning pitcher was Ryan Rowland-Smith, picking up his 3rd win after pitching a shutout 12th inning. The offensive stars for the PawSox was 3B Johnathan Diaz who went 3-4 including a 2RBIs as well as 1B Drew Sutton and CF Mitch Maier, who each had a HR apiece.

The PawSox will continue their series with the Chiefs on Saturday at 6:05 pm as the PawSox will be having Star Wars night. Then the series continues on into Sunday at 1:05 pm followed by the series finale on Monday at 7:05 pm.
