In YOU'VE GOTTA BE EFFIN' KIDDING ME News: ESPN has been scrambling to recover their PR dignity after 3 separate incidents involving racially insensitive comments aimed at Knick phenom Jeremy Lin. The Knicks had been on a winning streak since Lin became the starting point guard, but that streak came to an end on Friday, sparking the controversial comments.
ESPNEWS anchor Max Bretos was suspended for 30 days after slipping in an ethnic slur regarding the Asian-American Lin on the air. There was also a similar slur made Saturday on ESPN Radio by a non-ESPN employee. The worst of the offenses however, was the ESPN Mobile story headline which read:
"CHINK IN THE ARMOR"
This was posted following the Knicks' first loss since the emergence of the Harvard alum, Lin. The Mobile editor has since been fired, but the damage had already been done.
ESPN is the largest sports media outlet in the world (until WBOB Sports takes over), and to allow this egregious oversight to occur not once, but thrice on your various medium is completely ridiculous.
I take offense to this, not just because it is 2012 and we should beyond allowing bigotry within our mass-media, but also because of its laziness... Chink in the Armor?? Zero points for creativity. That is just plain lazy ignorance!
