Greg Norton has been hired as Minor League Hitting Coordinator after previously holding the same position in the Miami Marlins organization from 2012-13. Norton played 13 big league seasons for six teams from 1996-2009 before joining the Marlins as a coach in 2010. Most recently, he was the hitting coach at Auburn University from 2013-15. Billy McMillon is taking over as Minor League Outfield and Baserunning Coordinator. McMillon managed the last two seasons in Double-A Portland, earning Eastern League Manager of the Year honors in 2014. Prior to his time in Portland, the former major leaguer managed for four years in the Red Sox system at Single-A Greenville (2010-11) and High-A Salem (2012-13). Brandon Henry, entering his 10th year in the organization, has been promoted to Minor League Athletic Training Coordinator. Henry most recently spent the last four years as Portland’s athletic trainer, previously serving in the same role for Short-A Lowell (2007-08), Greenville (2009), and Salem (2010-11). Edgar Barreto will serve as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, having spent the last two seasons as a full-time strength and conditioning coach with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox. He had previously worked with the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Red Sox (2010), Portland Sea Dogs (2012), and the GCL Red Sox (2013). David Herrera has been promoted to Latin America Medical Coordinator in his ninth season in the Red Sox organization. In addition, he will serve as the athletic trainer for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. Herrera most recently worked as the athletic trainer for Salem since 2012. Prior to joining Salem, he had held the same post with the GCL Red Sox (2008), Lowell (2009), and Greenville (2010-11). Pawtucket (Triple-A, International League) Kevin Boles will return for this third year as manager of the PawSox and his ninth season as a member of the Red Sox organization. Bruce Crabbe will also serve as coach for his third year with the team, extending his tenure with the organization to 12 years. Pitching coach Bob Kipper will return for his second year with Pawtucket and his 17th overall season with the organization, and Rich Gedman will continue with his second year as the PawSox hitting coach, his sixth season as a coach in the organization. Jon Jochim enters his seventh season with the PawSox and first as senior athletic trainer, his 12th overall year with Red Sox affiliates. Joining the organization as Pawtucket’s strength and conditioning coach is Kirby Retzer. He previously served as strength coach for the High-A Fort Myers Miracle and the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Twins in the Minnesota system. Portland (Double-A, Eastern League) Carlos Febles joins Portland as manager in his 10th season in the Red Sox organization. He has spent the previous five years managing at Lowell (2011), Greenville (2012-13), and Salem (2014-15). Before his managing career, Febles served as a hitting coach for four years in the organization. Sea Dogs pitching coach Kevin Walker will return to the staff for his second season in this role and his eighth season coaching Red Sox affiliates. New to Portland’s staff is hitting coach Jon Nunnally, who coached last year at Salem. 2016 will mark his second season with the organization and 10th as a professional coach. Athletic trainer Eric Velazquez joins Portland after two seasons with New York Mets Single-A affiliate Savannah. Prior to Savannah, he spent 2013 as an athletic trainer for the Short-A Brooklyn Cyclones, also in the Mets organization. Strength and conditioning coach Chris Messina joins the team after spending last season in the same role with Pittsburgh’s Rookie-level Bristol Pirates. Salem (High-A, Carolina League) Joe Oliver has been named Salem’s manager in his third year on a professional coaching staff, all with the Red Sox organization. The former catcher, who finished his playing career with Boston in 2001, spent the last two seasons managing Lowell. Paul Abbott will return for his second season as Salem’s pitching coach, his sixth coaching season in the organization. Joining Salem’s staff is hitting coach Nelson Paulino, who enters his 19th season coaching Boston affiliates. Most recently, Paulino spent time at Greenville from 2014-2015. Nick Kuchwara will be the team’s head athletic trainer in his first season with Salem. He was the trainer for Lowell last season after having previously worked in the same capacity in Portland and Pawtucket. Greenville (Single-A, South Atlantic League) Darren Fenster continues his tenure as manager of the Drive. 2016 will mark his third season at the helm in Greenville and fifth season coaching in the organization. Walter Miranda returns for his third year as Greenville’s pitching coach. Between his playing and coaching careers, he has spent 17 years with the Red Sox organization, including two stints in his current role (2007, 2015-present). Lee May Jr., new to the organization, has been named hitting coach. May played eight minor league seasons from 1986-93 before coaching nine minor league seasons in the Mets (1999) and Indians (2004-11) organizations. He most recently served as minor league hitting coordinator in the Mariners organization from 2011-15. Nick Faciana will be the Drive’s athletic trainer after finishing the 2015 season in the same role. Lowell (Short-A, New York-Penn League) Iggy Suarez, who served as Lowell’s hitting coach in 2015, will manage the Spinners in his second professional coaching season. Suarez spent seven seasons playing in the Red Sox system from 2003-09. Lance Carter returns for his second season as pitching coach and fourth season as a professional coach, previously in the Philadelphia Phillies system from 2010-11. New to Lowell’s staff is Wilton Veras, who joins the club as hitting coach after four seasons in that role in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. Veras spent 1995-2002 playing in the Red Sox organization before returning as a coach in 2012. Scott Gallon will join the staff as the Spinners’ athletic trainer. Gallon, who was an intern with the Single-A Sarasota Red Sox in 2001, has spent the last four years as an athletic trainer with Boston College. Gulf Coast League Red Sox (Rookie, Gulf Coast League) Tom Kotchman returns to the helm for his third year as manager of the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, having led the team to consecutive GCL championships in his first two years. Pitching coach Dick Such returns for his fourth straight season and eighth year coaching Red Sox affiliates. Coach Dave Tomlin will also remain on staff for a 14th season with the organization and sixth in his current role. Junior Zamora will continue as hitting coach, entering his second year in that capacity after seven years as bench coach for the Rookie-level DSL Red Sox. David Herrera will assume dual roles as the Red Sox’ Latin American medical coordinator and GCL Red Sox athletic trainer. Ben Chadwick, who joined Salem last year as strength and conditioning coach, will serve in that role for the GCL Red Sox in 2016. Dominican Summer League Red Sox 1 (Rookie, Dominican Summer League) Jose Zapata will return for his 10th season as the club’s Latin American field coordinator and manager of the DSL Red Sox. Carlos Adolfo will join the staff in his first season in the organization as hitting coach. A former minor league outfielder, Adolfo played in the Montreal Expos organization from 1994-99 followed by six seasons in independent leagues from 2002-07. Also new to the organization is pitching coach Aquilino Lopez, who played five major league seasons with Toronto (2003-04), Colorado (2005), Philadelphia (2005), and Detroit (2007-08), also pitching in the Korean Baseball Organization from 2009-2012. Carlos Sequera and Leonel Vasquez will serve as coaching assistants. Guillermo Hinojosa will return for his seventh year as athletic trainer. Mario Anguizola moves from his post as athletic trainer for the DSL Red Sox 2 in 2015 to become the strength and conditioning coach for the DSL Red Sox 1 in 2016, his second season with the organization. Dominican Summer League Red Sox 2 (Rookie, Dominican Summer League) Aly Gonzalez will return to his role as manager of the DSL Red Sox 2 after leading the team to first place in the San Pedro de Macoris division in his managerial debut last season. He has been with the Red Sox since signing as a minor leaguer in 2008, spending the last four seasons as a coach. After his first coaching season in 2015 with the DSL Red Sox 1, Ozzie Chavez will serve as hitting coach for the DSL Red Sox 2. Oscar Lira returns as pitching coach, a role he held with the lone DSL Red Sox team from 2012-14 and last year with the DSL Red Sox 2. Claudio Sanchez will work as a coaching assistant for the 11th consecutive season. Antonio Diaz, entering his 21st season with the Red Sox, will serve his ninth year as strength and conditioning coach in the DSL. |
