By Kevin Aherne One hour, fifty-two minutes, and eight seconds. That is how much game time elapsed before we had a winner for Game 1 of the 2013 Stanley Cup. It took nearly all of three overtimes, and a double deflection for the Chicago Blackhawks to best the Boston Bruins in Game 1, the fifth longest game in Stanley Cup history.
Thanks to two goals from Milan Lucic, the Bruins jumped out to an early lead, but Chicago would soon get into the action, and keep pace for the rest of the night. The game would be a virtual deadlock into the end of regulation, then again after one overtime, then a second..., However, as both teams were visibly tired, and bars began to close around the loyal fans, an airborn puck was redirected off the stick of 21-year old Center, Andrew Shaw, and past Tuuka Rask for the win just after 1:00 AM EST. |
