It's been a great run since 1995! Eighteen years with only one hiccup (2008). But with just 32 games remaining in the season, the New York Yankees will not be a part of the 2013 American League Playoffs! You heard it hear first... mathematically they can still qualify... but rest assured; it will not happen! Forget about it! With a just over a month remaining in their regular season, the Evil Empire sits seven games behind Boston in the AL East. The Red Sox and Yankees do play seven more times the rest of the way, but anything less than six wins by the Yanks will not be enough to unseat the consistent Sox. The Bronx Bombers will not win the division!
Sitting a mere 3.5 games out in the Wild Card lead, and the fifth easiest remaining schedule amongst the contenders, that would seemingly be a better chance for the former Highlanders to achieve that post season goal! But consider this: The teams with the four easiest schedules in that category are: Tampa, Oakland, Cleveland and Baltimore. So Yankee fans... It ain't gonna happen! There is too much of a hill to climb! The biggest obstacle keeping the Yankees from a chance to garner title number 28, quite frankly, is their failure to put together any consistent winning streaks. Yes,they've won twelve of seventeen since August 2nd, but in addition to the seven games remaining with the division's leader, they have seven with the Orioles and only three with the Rays. The alleged boost that Alex Rodriguez gave them with his "dramatic" homer against Boston, starter Ryan Dempster has become a mere footnote to the drama surrounding the team. Whatever momentum that incident incited has worn off! As a diehard Boston Red Sox fan, I cannot help but think of Mariano Riviera, who, in his farewell season, will not participate in something he has grown all too familiar with... post season baseball! The farewell tour, which in my opinion, he is deservedly owed, will end with game 162. A not so fitting end to a Hall of Fame career. So be it! That being said... I hereby declare the "Greatest Franchise in the History of Baseball" an early tee time at their favorite golf course... You're Done!
