One of the greatest achievements of human kind has reached its fourth decade this year. The dice in your head are rolling and the mountain dew in your cup is flowing. Yes, Dungeons and Dragons is 40 years old. It seems like it has only been a week but this game truly changed the face of entertainment for decades after its birth.

Dungeons and Dragons is truly a wonderful experience. It has been referenced in media, influential in media, and even persecuted in media. If you have not played it I highly recommend you seek it out. It is difficult to describe because it is such a unique game. There is never a winner, and the only way to lose if you do not have any fun. There is sometimes a board, sometimes a screen, but always dice.

FOR NERDS
The ever present chance of failure is what propels the narrative and drives your desire to continue playing. You take the role of a hero just beginning your journey, and with the right friends, right choices and a little bit of luck you can become a hero of legend.
This sort of epic prose is always how I think about Dungeons and Dragons. Sometimes it devolves into a screaming match, or a session of heavy drinking, but it always leaves you wanting more. It is great! It combines problem solving with odds calculation and socializing and impromptu acting. There is an episode of the television show Community called "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" that you really should watch for the best example of what a game session is really like. The only real falsehood about that episode is that finishing a narrative usually takes multiple sessions.
There is a documentary being released called the "The Great Kingdom" that details the creation of dungeons and dragons and the personalities behind the game. Click the link to the facebook page to watch the trailer. It looks awesome. Soon enough you will be rolling dice with me, and everyone will roll a 20!!!!
