While sports fans start to shift their focus onto football, there is still baseball to be played. With a little over a month left in the season, things are starting to heat up in the playoff races. To talk some baseball with Parente & Pal is Los Angeles Dodgers Beat Writer JP Hoornstra.

Johnny "Football" Takes a Backseat. The two most polarizing athletes in all of sports, arguably, represent the city of Cleveland. LeBron James of the Cavaliers and newcomer Johnny Manziel, rookie quarterback of the Browns. James is a topic of discussion for another day, while Manziel is a water cooler novel unfolding. The recent chapter of which comes as no surprise following Head Coach Mike Pettine's announcement of Brian Hoyer as the regular season starter. The cocky and brash former Texas A&M stud is simply not ready for prime time. In action thus far in preseason tells us so. He has not caught up to the speed of the game while looking sometimes uncomfortable in the pocket. Fresh off his knockout win over Jamie Velazquez in June for the then-vacant New England title, Lincoln's Gingras (14-4-1, 9 KOs) will defend the belt against McCreedy (15-7-2, 6 KOs), the pride of Lowell, Mass., who will also put his Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) Northeast title on the line. The fight is scheduled for eight rounds and will headline a stacked card also showcasing one of the most feared fighters in women's boxing along with New England's new blood, three young fighters recently added to the CES roster in their first show all under the same roof. "This card is unique because we're featuring both the present and future of New England boxing," CES president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. said. "This is a treat for the true fight fan. You can't get something like this anywhere else." Gingras-McCreedy is a fight fan's dream, two pure punchers willing to trade blows in the center of the ring. It's the matchup fans in New England have wanted to see for quite some time, especially after Gingras won the N.E. title in convincing fashion with a knockout win over Velazquez. Absent an extension of the agreement, the current rules will be reinstated beginning with the 2016 season. Under the agreement, 2014 and 2015 Practice Squads will increase from the current maximum of eight players to 10 players. Cumberland American fell 8-7 to Chicago's Jackie Robinson West Monday night in the Little League World Series, sending the New England representatives home from the tournament. The defeat, however, did not come in vain, as coach Dave Belisle gave his players an impassioned reminder that nobody can ever take away from them what they accomplished as a team.

It was a rough weekend for the Pawtucket Red Sox. They ended up getting swept by their divisional rivals, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to drop to 71-59 and be 4 games behind the division leading Syracuse Chiefs (74-54). However the next team they were going to face was a team they had success all this season, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Already sporting a 7-3 record against them, the PawSox looked to gain some ground in the Chiefs in the division. |
