As the San Diego Padres' trade rotisserie continues, the Will Middlebrooks era has officially ended in Boston. On Friday, San Diego agreed to send their newly-acquired catcher, Ryan Hanigan to the Red Sox in exchange for their young third baseman. Middlebrooks, who had an impressive start to his career (.288, 15 HR, 54 RBI in 75 games played) in 2012, has been hampered by injuries, and failed to regain momentum for his career. The Red Sox, who have also added some offensive fire power to their arsenal this offseason, in Hanigan, will receive a veteran backup for 24-year old Christian Vazquez. Hanigan, 34, was acquired by the Padres earlier this week as part of their trade with Tampa Bay for Wil Myers. Hanigan played in 84 games for the Rays in 2014, hitting .218 with 5 home runs and 34 RBI. With the additions of free agent infielders Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, the dumping of Middlebrooks was an inevitability. Middlebrooks, 26, has two full seasons of MLB service time, and is not eligible for Free Agency until 2019. |
