On the last Sabbath of January 2014, Comic's Corner returned to Multiverse Comics on Broadway in Providence, RI with our monthly showcase, "2 Comic Minimum." This show was a long time coming, since the shop owner and I had been talking about doing a Comedy Show for the grand opening of the shop in October, 2013. We did the opening in October and a showcase in November. Both went very well, yet we were unsure whether or not we would be back in the next year or not. Now we are one 2014 show under the belt and going into February with a a bang. Dan MacKnight
In honor of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, I figured I would take a closer look at legendary US snowboarder Shaun White’s new band, Bad Things, and their debut self-titled album. White and Co. teamed up with producer Rob Schnapf (Elliot Smith, Beck, Dr. Dog, Kevin Devine) and released the album through their label, Warner Bros. Not a bad label to back you on your first-ever release, huh? Evan Mckay
My girlfriend Crystal and I have developed a tradition of celebrating Valentine's day not only the week after, because all the restaurants are packed and awful, but we always manage to see an action movie. Last year was terrible. "A Good Day to Die Hard" was awful. This year was only marginally better. Robocop. I just wanted it to be a gritty Sci-Fi cop story. Instead it got dragged through the mud of trying to play on people's paranoia of drones. Kenny Nardozza
The class of the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame is shaping up to be one of the greatest of all time. Three legends have already been announced and in my mind are long overdue for the honor. This all happens on April 5, 2014 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana the night before Wrestlemania XXX. One of the most important nights of the year in the WWE Universe, it is now circled on my calendar. As I will now be able to watch the WWE Hall of Fame Induction ceremony LIVE for the first time ever, thanks to the forthcoming WWE Network that drops on February 24th. The Hype right now is through the roof! Here is a look at the WWE 2014 Hall of Fame class inductees. Freddy Choyle Who is St. Valentine? - Wikipedia says - Saint Valentine (in Latin, Valentinus) is a widely recognized third-century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love. Nothing is reliably known of St. Valentine except his name and the fact that he died on February 14 on Via Flaminia in the north of Rome. It is uncertain whether St. Valentine is to be identified as one saint or two saints of the same name. Several differing martyrologies have been added to later hagiographies that are unreliable. For these reasons this liturgical commemoration was not kept in the Catholic calendar of saints for universal liturgical veneration as revised in 1969.[2] But the "Martyr Valentinus who died on the 14th of February on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge in Rome" still remains in the list of officially recognized saints for local veneration.[3] Saint Valentine's Church in Rome, built in 1960 for the needs of the Olympic Village, continues as a modern, well-visited parish church. Well depending on who you talk to you may get a different answer. I think the real question on February 14th is, who is Hallmark? I know what you are thinking, here comes a Valentines Day bash blog, on the contrary. There is a time and place in life for the lovey dovey, cutesy smootchie, gag me with a spoon stuff. If the good people of earth have deemed February the 14th a day in which we all pause to show a little appreciation to the one we love, well what's the harm in that? In honor of the occasion, my gift to you , my loving fans, The Top Five Romantic Rock Songs Now before you start with the onslaught of hate mail, may I remind you that music is indeed inspired by love. For the sake of this countdown, I have selected tracks that I believe to be the best representations of love. ow I must admit I am at heart a hopeless romantic. Accused by many lovers of being stuck on an ex. I tend to want to dispute that fact, however may I just add we all have are own issues. The Sexual Intellectual: Alicia@990wbob.com
When I lived in Jacksonville North Carolina, I was unemployed and had a husband who was putting in 12-15 hour days training to deploy for Iraq. I had a lot of time on my hands. I visited lots of local stores but I spent the most hours at Books A Million. One day I randomly came across (no pun intended) a book called "100 strokes of the Brush Before Bed" it was small and cheap so I picked it up and went home. After a long day, I found myself reading the book while my husband snored away... Will Grapentine During the doldrums of winter, it's easy to fall into a cold-weather funk. But thanks to the car industry, one avenue to recovery lies with the international auto show. Auto shows, spread across the nation, kick off in Boston in late January, move throughout major metropolitan areas nationally (Chicago and Providence just wrapped up), and cap off in New York around the first week of April. With this year's selection, gear heads and casual car fans alike are able to get up-close & personal with some of the flashiest models - both domestic and foreign - they may NEVER see on the road Hey Corner-keteers! I distinctly remember when I first heard theJohn Butler Trio: I was fifteen years old, it was shortly after they released Sunrise Over Sea, and their concert at the Sydney Opera House was being shown on PBS one night as I was flipping through the channels. I was blown away by their truly original style, which is a weird blend of everything to rootsy folk jams, to blues with a touch of hip hop and reggae. I just couldn’t believe that an acoustic guitar could make the sounds that he was making (granted, he plays his acoustic instruments through a Marshall stack with no less than a billion effects pedals). Since that day, I have seen the John Butler Trio play no less than five times, almost every time they came through Boston. But in 2010, John changed out his lineup and released April Uprising. I hated it. All those funky jams on his previous releases were replaced with commercial, soulless radio pop. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and I walked away from the John Butler Trio for a while. Well, when I saw that JBT had released their first album in almost four years, I hesitantly decided to give it a listen. The songs off of Flesh and Blood have some bits that remind me of Sunrise Over Sea and Grand National, but a lot of it was stepping into uncharted territory for the band. Thankfully, it was a big step away from April Uprising. She loves me, she loves me not. She loves me, she loves me not. She loves me, she spiked my scotch with strychnine.
