For any music lover out there, they might have their pulse on the New York City music scene and not even realize it. So much history and a countless amount of epic bands have risen from the streets of the 5 boroughs to change the music of their generation while having it become timeless for years to come. Names like The Velvet Underground, The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Strokes and TV On The Radio come to mind, but in this cornucopia of talent there might be another band to grab the torch and rock your socks off. Skaters and their debut album Manhattan have a good chance of being that band to break the mold with their energetic & jolting brand of music that they like to refer to as “Plasma Punk”. Along with staying true to their punk roots, what impresses me the most about Skaters is that they’re not afraid to add different dimensions to create something truly original. Once you press play on this gem, you’ll know exactly what I mean. The Sexual Intellectual: Alicia@990wbob.com The reality is, most parents have no clue where to begin speaking to their children about sex. The majority of us would agree that we didn't get the "birds and the bees" talk and it didn't help our first time experiences with sex. So the question is...Why is there so much shame around sex education? Freddy Choyle The Olympic games are officially underway this weekend and all the talks are on the housing conditions. It seems Putin focused his attention, more on what gays might do, while visiting Russia, then, anything else. Some hotels were not ready for the games. Media members showed up to hotels without working bathrooms. Some rooms were still under construction as patrons checked in. Reports of stray dogs running around the halls and rooms, are all over twitter. This made me glad (for once) that the evil tyrant that runs this wonderful media outlet, did not send me to this god forsaken place. Still it inspired me to write, this week's Top Five on, Vacation Disasters, enjoy.............. Dan Martin
It was a Friday night here in RI and once again a national comedian worthy of the effort had come to one of the two major clubs in town. Kurt Braunohler had come to town to do some shows on our fair coast and we here at Comic's Corner couldn't have been more thrilled. Why were we so thrilled? Why are there only two actual comedy venues? Why are comedy fans, including us, so pretentious? We will try to answer all of these questions and perhaps raise some more but, no need for name calling. Rob Duguay Whenever I listen to Providence electro-punk duo Math The Band, I can relate the experience to drinking a really good cup of coffee after chugging a box full of Nerds. Very energetic and fast-paced, their music is rhythmic caffeine for the soul that turns you into a human whirlwind after hearing the first note. Taking things to a whole new level with their 11th studio album Stupid & Weird, Kevin Steinhauser & Justine Mainville incorporate saxophones, chimes and epic 8-bit tunes into their sound. Obliterating the senses in a very good way along with transporting your musical taste to a brand new dimension, Math The Band’s Stupid & Weird is exactly what your ears need now and maybe forever. A "Bloggening" is like a happening. Just without the killer plant life. Or whatever, I fell asleep during that movie. Four times. Welcome to Comedy On Us: Vol. 19! I call this a Bloggening because it isn't quite a Blogisode, though there is a storm brewing so there may be cancellations in our Live show and out in the comedy world in general. So below I will share some things with you that have been going on for us here at the Comic's Corner and what we have for next week, which would have mostly been this week. You'll get it, keep reading...
Evan McKay One of the greatest achievements of human kind has reached its fourth decade this year. The dice in your head are rolling and the mountain dew in your cup is flowing. Yes, Dungeons and Dragons is 40 years old. It seems like it has only been a week but this game truly changed the face of entertainment for decades after its birth. Dungeons and Dragons is truly a wonderful experience. It has been referenced in media, influential in media, and even persecuted in media. If you have not played it I highly recommend you seek it out. It is difficult to describe because it is such a unique game. There is never a winner, and the only way to lose if you do not have any fun. There is sometimes a board, sometimes a screen, but always dice. Will Grapentine
Last night we saw Denver and Seattle duke it out (well, on paper at least) to claim greatness throughout the halls of the NFL and bring the 2013/2014 season to a close. Meanwhile, throughout all of New England their was a collective "HUMPH" followed by some shrugs and a few eye rolls (PLUS a few cheers for Denver's demolition). Still no matter who has played in 'The Big Game' - or who WILL play in years to follow - one thing is for timeless: Super Bowl ads ARE AWESOME!!! Something almost as buzz-heavy as the game itself, this years Super Bowl 30-second spot will cost approximately $4 million (According to Paul Farhi of The Washington Post), right around the same price that CBS was charging to get some airtime during the Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers match up last year. But just like the game itself has its winners and losers, the ads do too. Here are the best and worst ad spots for SUPER BOWL XLVIII. The Sexual Intellectual: Alicia@990wbob.com The reason why I originally came up with the concept of doing the radio show Raw Sex, was not only to educate the masses on sexual topics but also to let my listeners know that they aren't alone in the way they feel. If you have been tuning in, I let everyone know that I was accepted as an intern to The Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health located in Pawtucket, RI. The Center is owned by Megan Andelloux, Licensed Sexologist and nationally known sexuality speaker. She visits multiple colleges across the united states to inform students about sex positivity, education, gender, health and much more. Chick Frasco - @ChickFrasco
