The moments in my life where I’ve felt closest with the people I care about were when we were sharing jokes. - Mike Birbiglia We go to comedy shows expecting to laugh... it’s sort of the point. In his show at Newport Yachting Center show on Friday Mike Birbiglia more than delivered on that expectation while also taking every opportunity to show the crowd just how fragile, unpredictable, and amazing that laughter can be. One of the last Hollywood greats, Lauren Bacall passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 89 at her residence in Manhattan. She suffered a massive stroke. Born September 16, 1924, in New York City, she began her movie career in 1944 when she was cast her in “To Have and Have Not” (my personal favorite) opposite her future husband Humphrey Bogart. Her career lasted six decades; she went on to star in “Designing Woman” with Gregory Peck, “How to Marry a Millionaire” with Marilyn Monroe, and many others – she worked on more than 70 films. Ms. Bacall was known for her sultry looks and her strong personality. She truly was a star of the Golden Era of Hollywood and will be missed. Open auditions for the University of Rhode Island Theatre Department will be held for two award-winning plays, “Seminar” and “Avenue Q.”
Laurie Piatkowski Once more I dip my senses into a glass of fine beer, this beer I actually tried when I was in Connecticut for a wedding. Now at the time I was living in Maine and never heard of this beer before because most of the stores just don't carry it. After a long drive from Maine to Connecticut my dad and I stopped at the pier to look at the ocean, anything other than staring at a bunch of cars for three hours. We then processed to go to a package store, and found a small one tucked up on a hill with a very small parking lot. Inside was row after row of wines, craft beer, different whiskeys, rum, gin you name it they probably have it. We looked around and my dad found Ballantine Ale it had been a long time since he last had it so decision made. Dan Martin
Welcome to a very special Top 5 is Alive!!! We were asked* some time ago to add a top five segment to our arsenal. So now here we are. It is 2014 and one of my childhood favorites has been remade into a blockbuster summer CRAP SALAD! By non other than Michael Bay and company. Notorious violators of the Eighties, just see Transformers, or rather, don't bother. The truth is, I have a lot of gripes with this "film,"** though I am limiting myself to five. Five long individual rants, but five none the less. * Contractually obligated ** I threw up a little bit calling it a film too. So please, enjoy the nerd rage and proceed to the theater with caution this summer. Here it is... The 1st annual Providence Folk Festival will take place on Sunday, September 7th at Roger Williams National Memorial in Downtown Providence.
The non-profit arts organization that presented the Hear In Rhode Island Music Festival from 1994-2001 and currently the Downtown Sundown Series- Hear In Rhode Island, Inc, is producing the event in conjunction with Roger Williams National Memorial. The fledgling festival will feature two stages of acoustic-themed music. Mary E. O'Connor
Award-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams died Monday, in an apparent suicide. His body was found inside his Tiburon, CA home. Williams was found in the home unconscious, and it is suspected that the cause of death is asphyxia. He was last seen alive Sunday evening at 10 pm. He was 63 years old. Williams starred in more than 100 movie and television productions, initially as Mork in the 1978 sitcom Mork and Mindy, and most notably Good Will Hunting--for which he won the 1997 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other great titles starring Williams include: Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook, The Birdcage, Patch Adams, Night at the Museum--and most recently, The Crazy Ones, a CBS sitcom which was cancelled in May. Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, said: "I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken." President Barack Obama commented on Williams' death, saying, "He was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit." Sometimes in life you have to go beyond Thunderdome to see the panel you want to see. And at Comic con that may mean sleeping in the urine-soaked street of San Diego. And that's what people did to see the footage for "Mad Max Fury Road."* *Official Trailer from Comic Con! Holy Easter Eggs Affleck! Mike Holmes
“I don’t drink before shows, because I’m a professional.” - NS It wasn’t something most of the people in attendance at the 1700 seat venue were expecting to hear, especially from the man whose platinum 2007 cd was titled “Party”. Nick Swardson’s body of work has backed up that claim, (at least the latter part,) and his August Eighth show at the Newport Yachting Center was no different. |
