What a week it has been... the Bruins, Celtics, and Friars have accomplished some Impressive feats, we survived another truck day, and we have been exposed to multiple unique news stories regarding everyone's favorite simple-minded tight end. So let's get right to the recap of the week in New England Sports... Rondo WHo?Celtics: 25-23 The C's lost Rajon Rondo and Jared Sullinger last week, but haven't skipped a beat. Winners of 5 straight, this team is cruising thanks to the play of Barbosa, Terry, and Lee. They are making the most of their increased playing time, and have started to show us that Rondo's importance may have been overstated. They have been shopping Garnett in an attempt to add depth to their front court, but that has not fazed the 18 year veteran, as he dropped 27 points and 10 rebounds on Toronto Wednesday night. More Than You Could Ever RaskBruins: 7-1-1 After allowing Buffalo to make a 3rd period comeback last Thursday, the Bruins bounced back with a couple impressive wins North of the border this week. Krecji's (6 Assists) playmaking has set up some great goals from Marchand, Horton and Seguin. The defense has continued to play well, behind the play of Chara and Dougie Hamilton... and Tuukka Rask continues to stand on his head, with a 1.97 GAA in 8 games played. Marching Towards MadnessLet's take a look at the Rhode Island college hoops teams and see how they rank this week: 1) PC Friars (12-11): Their record isn't overly impressive, but big wins against Nova and #17 Cincy this week earns the Friars the top spot. 2) Bryant (15-6): The Bulldogs continue to roll through the NEC, and may be headed toward their first ever taste of March Madness. 3) Brown (8-10): At 2-2 in the Ivy League, the Bears still have a chance, but this team seems destined for mediocrity. 4) URI (6-15): Lamar Odom isn't walking through that door. Despite playing well against some formidable opponents, the Rams have lost 5 straight, including a 28 point beat down by UMass on Wednesday. Maybe next year Rhody. Feeding The MonsterTuesday was a Federal Holiday in Red Sox Nation: Truck Day. The special day in which desperate fans are invited to witness the team's equipment being loaded into an 18-wheeler at Fenway, and shipped down to Southwest Florida. While it is a pointless exercise driven by the ownership group's need for money and attention, it is New England's version of Groundhog Day... Only 3 More weeks until baseball! A Tight End and His Wide ReceiverThere hasn't been much news out of Foxboro this week, unless you are referring to Rob Gronkowski, who has made headlines for a couple different reasons: First, he risked re-breaking his forearm (again) while attempting to DDT his brother at a Super Bowl Party in Vegas. Then, on Thursday, sex.com announced a bounty... They are offering Gronk $3.75 Million to star in an exclusive porn scene with his gal pal, Bibi Jones. Do you, Gronk! Do You! That wraps up this week's edition of Wicked Good Sports. For more on sporting news from New England and beyond tune into Psycho Sports every Tuesday at 7 PM. Here are my picks for the All-Defensive team entering the draft; some of these players could actually contribute to your team next season. Let’s get to it! ** Defensive End ** 1. Bjoern Werner (Florida State): The top defensive player in this draft Bjoern is a “can't miss” player who can provide instant production for any defense. 2. Barkevious Mingo (LSU): most people have Damontre Moore ranked over Mingo, and in five years you will be right, but Mingo is this year’s Jason Pierre-Paul, so still give him the slight edge. 3. Damontre Moore (Texas A&M): Let’s face it… Moore needs time to develop in the NFL, but he is an excellent pass rusher and can be a great player in the NFL. It will just take a year or two to get him there. 4. Ezekiel Ansah (Brigham Young): This 6-5 274 lbs. monster from Ghana is a very intriguing pick. I feel he is going to have a great combine and jump on a lot of teams’ radar, but as of right now he ranks 4th on my list. For the second year in a row, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has made post super bowl headlines for the wrong reasons. Last year it was a post-super bowl drunken dance that was caught on video just hours after the Patriots loss to the New York Giants. This year, the all-seeing eyes of TMZ once again caught the all pro tight end making news for the wrong reasons. Gronk was seen at a Las Vegas club dancing on a stage with some friends. Gronkowski would channel his inner Jake "The Snake" Roberts and DDT one of his friends on the stage. While applying the DDT, a move that can break a person’s neck if given the wrong way, Gronkowski fell right onto his injured arm, the broken arm which kept Gronk off of the field and may have cost the Patriots a birth in the big game. Rob Gronkowski may be the best tight end in football. However, moments like this must have the Patriots front office in disbelief. As much as Gronk is a force on the field healthy, off the field moments like this have raised growing concerns in the maturity of this young playmaker. New England has invested a plethora of money into Gronkowski to lock in thier great tight end. The Patriots do not want their return on investment to be millions of hits on TMZ. Gronks health has to be a growing issue as well. For the last two years he was not in good health in the biggest of games, which has resulted in the Patriots winning zero super bowls. The window for this Patriots team is growing smaller, and if Gronk keeps making headlines for the wrong reasons the window may slam shut in front of our eyes. - Joe Passarelli I have talked this over with a few people and I keep getting asked the same question. "Do you think the Super Bowl was a failure this year?" Well let’s look at all the elements and give it a full on performance review shall we? First things first… let’s talk the game. It was not much to dispute on the contested matchup between the Ravens and the 49ers. Both teams showed up to play the first half was not the edge of the seat match up i would of liked, but the second half sure made up for it. Was there controversy? Not as much as you would think. Yes, the lights went out and switched momentum to the 49ers. And yes, there was a “questionable call" on fourth and goal. But Flacco threw 3 TDs and you couldn't question any of them. Overall I give the game rating a B+ Next on to the commercials… They were a huge disappointment this year. Besides an M&M singing Meatloaf, I was unimpressed. The one that hit a shock wave was the GoDaddy.com commercial, where some people were grossed out, and found it offensive. Really? The last time I checked we were all that nerdy kid wanting to make out with a supermodel, weren't we? My commercial rating: D- Now we have the halftime show and I will admit, I thought it was going to be mediocre at best. I was surprised by how Beyonce performed and brought out Destiny's Child, putting on a really great show. I have to hand it to Beyonce, not because I am a fan of Jay-Z, but for the fact she did what she said she was going to do, and stole the show. Overall halftime show rating: A- To answer my aforementioned question about the Super Bowl being a "Super Dud…" I say NO. Overall Super Bowl rating: B -Stephen Moul 348 attempts, 2097 rushing yards, and 12 rushing touchdowns, Adrian Peterson fell nine yards short of the rushing record held by Eric Dickerson (2106) but he did not fall short of the MVP award this season. He beat out Peyton Manning collecting 30 1/2 votes to Peyton's 19 1/2. After an injury plagued last season, "All Day" Adrian Peterson out performed everybody and in my opinion single handedly took Minnesota the playoffs, A.P. had 10 one-hundred yard plus rushing games and averaged 6.0 Yards per attempt. The notable thing about this is that the NFL of recent Years has been a Quarterback driven League as of late and it is nice to see a Running Back like Adrian Peterson win the award.
Let's play a quick game called 'Guess That Yankee'. Here are your hints: 1. He's projected to miss most of, if not all of, the 2013 season due to injuries. 2. He is in the sixth year of a 10-year, $275-million contract he signed back in 2007. 3. He has been busted for steroid and HGH usage in the past. 4. He rather score with the ladies than on the baseball diamond. Give up? Why it's none other than Alex Rodriguez, the 3B of the New York Yankees. Why do you ask I bring up A-Rod at a time where we are all focusing on the Super Bowl? Well here's the kicker: Early this week, we all heard about the 'allegations' of one Ray Lewis taking some sort of performance enhancing stuff, blah blah blah. But then as soon as that 'report' came out, another report came out of left field, pardon the baseball terminology. Last Tuesday, the Miami New Times came out with a report that said that the 'All-Star' 3B, along with OF Melky Cabrera, SP Bartolo Colon, and 1B Nelson Cruz, had been receiving HGH and other PEDs from a former anti-aging clinic called Biogenesis of America LLC, located in Coral Cables Florida from 2009-2012. This is the 3rd time that the Yankees Third Baseman's name has been linked to PED usage (Remember 'The List' of 2003 and the 2010 incident with A-Rod going to see Dr. Anthony Galea, a man who notoriously used HGH for treating athlete's injuries). But no matter how many times A-Rod has denied these things, the evidence and testimonies are there to easily link him and with no 'cousin' insight to pin it on. While George Steinberner is rolling in his grave, his son Hal and Yankees GM Brian Cashman are now faced with paying $165-million, plus very lucrative incentives, to Alex Rodriguez over the remaining 6-years....or are they. If they wanted to, both Hal and Brian could take this to court and ask a judge to void the contract on reasons of conduct detrimental to the Yankees organization. Cashman and Steinberner could also produce evidence backing their case that in 2010, they specifically told A-Rod not to see Dr. Galea back in 2010 and yet he still did so. Now everybody is going to sit and wait to see what will happen during the offseason. With spring training coming up fast, will we see A-Rod donning a Yankees uniform and sit on the bench to collect a paycheck. Or will he become the most expensive free agent that nobody wants on their team? We only have a couple months left to find out. -Ryan L. Fox It all comes down to this, the whole enchilada. Super Bowl XLVII. Winner take all and gets immortalized, loser goes home and wonders why. This time around, we have the San Francisco 49ers vs. the Baltimore Ravens down in New Orleans, LA. Neither team is a stranger to this dance. This will be San Fran's 6th appearance on football's biggest stage, winning 4 during the 1980s (XVI in '81-82, XIX in '84-'85, XXIII in '88-'89, XXIV in '89-'90) and then XXIX in '94-'95. All were victories for the red and gold. On the other side, this will be the Raven's 2nd trip to the big dance, the first coming in Super Bowl XXXV during the '00-'01 season. Now aside from everything Ray Lewis, this is the first Super Bowl that pits two siblings as opposing oaches (Jim Harbaugh with the 49ers and John Harbaugh with the Ravens). Not too mention that the Madden 2013 simulation had picked the Ravens over the 49ers and since 2003, has predicted all but 2 Super Bowls winners correctly. That being all said, let's get this show on the road. Conference Championship Record: 2-0 Playoff Record: 6-4 |
