2017 is certainly off to an interesting start. In addition to a tumultuous political climate, this year also marks the 10th Anniversary for 990WBOB. In honor of this momentous occasion, Rhode Island's favorite independent media outlet decided it's best to look forward, rather than ahead. Thus, we introduce our first-ever Influencers Charity Cocktatil Gala, to be held February 23rd, to honor 9 Influencers to Watch in 2017. All proceeds for the event, to be held on February 23 at Cucina Rustica in Cranston, will be donated to Potter League for Animals.
After our Board of Directors poured through dozens of potential candidates from the arts, humanities, media, sports, and community, we identified 8 individuals as significantly noteworthy, and representative of the potential for great accomplishment in the coming year – and beyond. For the 9th slot, however, we at 990WBOB wanted to give our valued readers and listeners a choice to weigh in. Check out the nominees below and Vote for the 9th Influencer to Watch in 2017!
A federal court jury in Providence on Friday convicted Daniel E. Saad, 51, of Spencer, Mass., of devising and executing a scheme to burn down his Glocester, R.I., restaurant, Snow’s Clam Box Restaurant and Pub, and then attempting to collect on an insurance policy worth nearly one million dollars.
The jury convicted Saad on one count of arson, one count of use of fire to commit wire fraud, and two counts of wire fraud. The jury found that Saad set fire to his business shortly after 5:00 a.m. on November 30, 2014, and then initiated insurance claims via email later the same day and on the following day.

When you think of Boston College football, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you answered sub-.500 records, you’re on the right track but no. If you answered NFL players, then you’re spot on. Surprisingly enough, even though college football doesn’t attract a huge market like in other places (i.e. South, Midwest), BC has produced lots of NFL talent that ranks up there with other schools like Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Miami (aka, The U).
Stephen Ferrante, 61, of East Greenwich, was ordered detained in federal custody following an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Providence on Thursday before Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond on a federal criminal complaint charging him with attempting to persuade, induce, entice or coerce an individual who has not attained the age of 18 years to engage in sexual activity.
It is alleged in court documents that Ferrante arranged to engage in sexual activity with an 8-year-old female during a series of emails, text messages and a telephone conversation with a person he believed to be the minor’s step-father. The person he was communicating with was a Rhode Island State Police detective assigned to the State Police Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

When I think of Mary Tyler Moore’s passing (at age 80 in Greenwich,CT) this week I am reminded of two very distinct types of women. There is the perky and adorable Laura Petrie she portrayed on The Dick Van Dyke Show when she was barely out of her teens; juxtaposed with a chilling performance as a grieving mother in the Robert Redford directed Ordinary People which explored a darker and almost sinister side to her that was recognized with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress (she lost to Sissy Spacek for her role in Coal Miner's Daughter). |
