Rob's Album of The Week: Passion Pit's Gossamer

Rising to prominence after taking the world by storm with their amazing debut album Manners and the hit single "The Reeling", Cambridge, MA indie-synthpoppers Passion Pit are back with their highly anticipated second album, Gossamer, and it sounds like the talented quartet hasn't missed a beat. The band's first release since being signed to major label Columbia Records keeps their dancy, rhythmic brand of pop intact with tracks that are guaranteed to make you cut a rug and boogie like there's no tomorrow. A beautifully fantastic piece of music that promises to take your mind to another world and put you into a audacious trance, when it comes to music of Passion Pit there's no such thing as a sophomore slump.

Passion Pit is made up of Michael Angelakos on lead vocals and keys, Ian Hultquist on keys and guitar, Jeff Apruzzese on bass and synthesizer and Nate Donmoyer on drums. Forming out of a bunch of songs Angelakos wrote as a belated Valentine's Day gift for his then-girlfriend and originally being a solo project of Angelakos where he performed using a laptop, Hultquist approached Angelakos after a show in Boston about collaborating and the rest is history. Other than Angelakos, the members of the band attended the illustrious Berklee College of Music in Boston where they studied and honed their craft. The excellence of each song on Gossamer definitely shows what a school like Berklee can do for a musician's skills and abilities, simply fantastic stuff.

-Robert Duguay

It's always difficult dissecting an album to it's bare bones and picking the tracks that catch your ear, especially when it's a masterpiece like Gossamer, but I'll give it my best shot. "Take A Walk" is the lead single off of the new record, with pounding drums, smooth beats and rhythmic beauty coming from all angles that's purely infectious. "I'll Be Alright" starts off bouncing all over the place like fireworks on the 4th of July, with the synth and drums syncopating to make it sound like your eardrums are getting an electronic massage. "Constant Conversations" is filled with Marvin Gaye-esque R & B styles that just make you want to get close to the one you love and let the sparks fly. "Cry Like A Ghost" is a love song about a girl named Sylvia who Angelakos met at a bar while he was inebriated that tells a story about how that particular evening went, it reminds of those 80's new wave ballads but a whole lot better. "Love Is Greed" is a bass-filled track that examines the selfishness of love, how a lot of people use it for their own gain. So those are a few songs I like a lot from Passion Pit's new album, but don't just sit there and take my word for it. Get up off your ass, grab a copy of the album and listen in for yourself.

Due to Angelakos' mental health, Passion Pit will be beginning a tour of The United States, Canada, Japan and Australia later than scheduled at Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 2nd & 3rd and ending it at Stage AE in Pittsburgh, PA on November 6th. Most of the dates in the U.S. of A. will be either on the West Coast, the Southeast or the Midwest so unfortunately us New England music fanatics won't be able to see Passion Pit in our neck of the woods. Keep in mind, these guys are from New England so it shouldn't be long until they play around here again. While you wait for Passion Pit to grace your favorite local music venue, grab a copy of Gossamer. It's a jaw-dropping opus that shouldn't be ignored.

Brother, Can You Spare One Minute? Request Denied!!!

The upcoming Olympics mark the anniversary of a very significant historical event, do you know what that is?

Can’t recall?

How quickly we forget! How convenient to erase and re-write history as not to offend anyone? Well I will tell you!

The 2012 Olympics in London mark the 40th Anniversary of the “Munich Massacre“ which occured during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. During the games, a Palestinian Terrorist group (Whose name I refuse to mention) did an unconscionable, cowardly Act of Hatred,  violently raiding the Israeli dorms, taking the athletes hostage for political reasons.

The result was a Slaughter of Innocence: 11 Israeli Athletes and Coaches DEAD!!!

Documentation has proven that the West German Government was tipped off to the terrorist plot, and failed to add extra security precautions. The Israeli Government had concerns regarding the lax security and wanted security beefed up, however the request was denied.  Neo-Nazi cells within Germany assisted the Palestinian terrorists. The Israel Government called on world leaders to condemn this vile assault, yet only one Middle Eastern country condemned the assault.

The Israeli Government, with support from Jewish and Christian communities around the world wanted to honor the fallen Athletes on the 40th year Anniversary of this massacre. They asked the 2012 Olympic Committee for just ”One Minute of Silence."

Request denied!!!

Just like 40 years ago when they asked for additional security.  Oh my, how the Olympics sold their soul, caving to the pressures of England’s Muslim problem. The Olympic committee is showing their Anti-Semitism, just as they did in 1972.

Palestine Authorities have said that any show of solidarity with the victims would constitute racism. “Sports are a bridge for love, communication and the spreading of peace between nations and should not be used for divisiveness and the spread of racism,” Palestinians are opposed to “Israel’s attempts to exploit the Olympic Games for propaganda purposes.”

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?  They want to blame the Victims for being slaughtered?

I know it is vogue in modern universities to hate Jews and Christians, I know it is popular to blame Israel for the world’s problems. (Eventhough Muslims kill more Muslims than Infidels). I guess nothing has changed in 40 years? I have news for all you haters that hide behind ideology and so called intellect, I Will Never Forget!

In memory of the Innocent that were lost I honor you:

Dark Night

What should have been a fun evening at the movies turned into tragedy last night at a cinema outside of Denver, Colorado.  Just a few moments into the premeire of Dark Knight Rises, a 24 year-old burst through the emergency exit, unpinned a tear gas cannister, and proceeded to open fire on the confused crowd.

All in all, 12 lives were lost, and nearly 60 others sustained injury after the gunman paraded up the aisles, unloading several rounds, seemingly at random into the crowd.  Several people were shot in the back as they attempted to flee, and some victims were as young as 3 months old.

The suspect, who used 4 firearms in the fatal shootings, had also booby-trapped his own apartment with some sort of homemade explosive and incindiary devices. He was apprehended in full riot gear in the theatre's parking lot, withour incident, but made a remark that he was "The Joker," refrencing the villian from the previous Batman film.

This act of cowardice came from the actions of a young man,  a University of Colorado medical student pursuing his Ph.D., with no prior criminal record.  However, this was clearly a troubled person, as his own mother had suspicion of her son's involvement. Upon being confronted by police, she claimed that "you have the right person."

While we certainly do not know the motives for this outburst,  questions needs to be asked: What could have been done to prevent the victims actions?  What signs of trouble were overlooked?

While these questions are pondered, thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims of this tragic and senseless tragedy.

Rob's Album of The Week: Fang Island's Major

An amazing band with a "everyone hi-fiving everyone" epic rock sound, Fang Island is back with their second album, Major, and it's guaranteed to make your jaw drop and your head bang. Forming at The Rhode Island School of Design originally as an art project back in 2005, the band at one time had 5 members but over the years has been twiddled down to a trio consisting of founder Chris Georges on guitar while sharing vocal duties with another guitarist in Jason Bartell and drummer Marc St. Sauveur beibg the backbone of the group with his thunderous skills. Together these three guys form one of the best underground indie bands out there today.

Joyus harmonies, tightly wound rhythms and triumphant solos are the best way to describe Fang Island's music. A band that feels like it could have made a soundtrack to an 80s sci-fi adventure flick but still has a modern quality that gives it them the ability to have a uniquely fantastic sound. Great party music that makes me think if Andrew W.K. was influenced by Pink Floyd more than Queen and Van Halen, it would sound a lot like Fang Island. Major does great work of showcasing Fang Island's spine-tingling talents to a t, promising to give your eardrums a sensation it has never felt before.

- Robert Duguay

"Regalia" is groovy to the core, showing different elements including trumpets and keyboards accenting the shredding of guitars and pulsating drums. "Seek It Out" is a tad bit on the heavier side with a earth-shattering downbeat that you can definitely bob your head to. "Sisterly" is a purely motivational track that definitely kicks ass, a must-listen if you're always looking for something to listen to in order to get revved up. "Never Understand" is another groovalicious anthem that's all about how ignorance is bliss, featuring blistering riffs that's bound to blow you away. "Dooney Rock" is an instrumental that starts up like an electric bluegrass tune and then halfway through it becomes a full blown rock opus. "Chompers" is another face-melting instrumental that has spine-tingling chord progressions and riffs that will leave you in awe. Despite me only highlighting a few, don't just rely on my opinion and grab a copy of the album to listen in for yourself and see what you think.

Fang Island will be embarking on a 36-date tour of The United States starting on July 19th opening for The Hold Steady at The Arch Street Tavern in Hartford, CT and ending at The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY on August 30th. Unfortunately for us New England music fans the only date Fang Island will be in the region will be in Hartford on the 19th, but who says you can't make the trip? While we collectively wait until Fang Island graces out local music venue with their magnificent presence, pick up a copy of Major, the band's new album. It'll introduce to a brand of rock & roll you've never experienced before in all your days.

Rob's Album of The Week: Verse's Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace

After breaking up back in 2009 and in turn the Providence punk scene taking a major blow, Verse is back with great vengeance and furious anger with Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace, the band's 5th studio album since their formation back in 2003. The seething fury of Sean Murphy's poetic rage-filled vocals, Zak Drummond's and Eric Lepine's dueling guitars that flat out shred with face-melting solos and the rhythm section consisting of the epic syncopation between Chris Berg's frets on the bass and the powerful drumming of Shawn Costa complete an amazing record that, in my opinion, is the best punk album to be released so far this year.

Reforming in December of 2011, Verse has been taking the world by storm ever since. Performing in front of a sold out festival crowd at Groezrock in Meerhout, Belguim on April 28th & 29th with the likes of punk legends Refused, Rancid, Thrice, Hot Water Music, The Bronx, The Bouncing Souls and countless others. The new record stakes the band's claim of being back and being here to stay with loud, pulsating tracks that are bound to make you go absolutely crazy once you press play. It reaffirms Verse's status as one of the premier underground punk acts in the world today, bringing the intensity of the band's live shows into 13 songs, an epic accomplishment to say the least.

"The Selfish of The Earth" is the opening track on the album with epic solos, heavy downbeats and pure relentless vocals courtesy of Sean Murphy about the greed of humanity. "The Relevance of Our Disconnect" is simply amazing, it gets louder, louder and louder with every second accented by a little bit of a blues influence coming from Drummond's and Lepine's guitars. "Finding a Way Out When There Is No Way" is a great song to listen to when you feel like your back is against the wall and every avenue is leading to your downfall, but your resilience will pay off. "The End of All Light" starts off a tad slow, with Murphy slamming down a little poetry about people's self-serving ways and how it pollutes society. The guitars and drums then kick in and invade the track with pure audial excellence, the loud/quiet/loud aspect makes me think if The Pixies were a hardcore punk band rather than alternative, they would have done a similar song. "Oceanic Tendencies" is a mosh pit anthem that's ferocious in every way, making you want to shove people around and then give everyone a big hug afterwards. Those are only some of the tracks I like off of Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace, but honestly the whole album is excellent and you should check it out for yourself.

On July 15th, Verse will be having their release show for Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace at The Met located in The Hope Artiste Village on 1005 Main St. in Pawtucket. It promises to be one of the biggest local music shows of the summer so make sure to get yourself a ticket. Afterwards Verse will be doing a 16-date tour starting at Vlamrock in Belgium on July 21st and ending at Hevy Fest in Kent, England on August 5th. Until then, make sure to grab a copy of Verse's new album, Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace. It'll make you bang your head like there's no tomorrow.
