The Dancing Cop will dance no more.
The Providence Police decided on Tuesday to discontinue a 30-year old Providence tradition by not allowing the dancing cop, Tony Lepore, Sr., to perform his iconic dance moves whilst directing downtown traffic his holiday season. The controversial decision came following demands by community leaders to remove the now-retired officer from his post. Lepore became a political lightning rod when he began speaking out against the #BlackLivesMatter movement in Providence. It was later uncovered by WBOB's Kevin Aherne that while Lepore was actively rallying for police to boycott Dunkin' Donuts for their role in the #BlackLivesMatter movement, he had failed to disclose his role as a spokesperson for Dunkin' competitor, Honey Dew Donuts. In the aftermath of last week's horrific Paris terrorist attacks, media became flooded by political rhetoric from both sides of the aisles regarding Syrian refugees current. Governors in 26 states made statements that they would refuse to accept any Syrian refugees, with the leaders of 17 other states saying they would welcome refugees with open arms. The U.S. House even passed a bill that essentially will close the border to Syrian and Iraqi refugees until enhanced security measures can be implemented. Oliver finds this last part to be ridiculous, given that refugees are already put through a much more rigorous screening process than any other type of immigration: “You’ll be put through security screenings by the National Counter-terrorism Center, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, and if you’re a Syrian refugee, you’ll get an additional layer of screening called the Syria Enhanced Review, which may include a further check by a special part of Homeland Security — the USCIS [United States Citizenship and Immigration Services] fraud detection and national security directorate,” Oliver explained. “And don’t relax yet, because we’ve barely even started.” Watch John Oliver explain how Syrian Refugees are currently processed below! If you’re a physically and mentally unfit Rhode Islander, you’re not alone. A new study released by Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, found that residents of the Ocean State suffer from a variety of health ailments, including high rates of heart attacks and depression.
