By George Goner (The Haunted Cabaret) This week's Top 5 discusses a rare breed: Movies with bad special effects that are well worth watching. In other words, the filmmakers did the best they could with difficult circumstances or a limited budget. The movies have good acting, decent writing, and fine cinematography. The money just ran out before they got to the effects studio.
In no particular order: By Bob Giusti When does a post on Facebook become too long? Should FB have character limits like Twitter?
I guess it depends on the information. A heartfelt impromptu eulogy for a well-known friend within the community can be inspirational and comforting. I might even enjoy reading a funny joke now and then. But they’re some folks out there that use it as a platform for rage. They’ll spew out a half page sentence and end by promising to “thin the herd” by deleting a few so and so’s from their all exclusive friend’s list. By Kevin Aherne (@kaherne17) We have lots of different vivacious personalities here at 990WBOB, and from that comes A LOT of different opinions. And because our personalities are so big and strong, our opinions are generally presented with passion and vitriol. We all have varying ideals of what is wrong with our culture, society, and our governance, but very rarely are will willing to take actions to affect actual change. So I want to, from time to time, introduce an outside, non-partisan interpretation of a looming social issue. This outside perspective is intended to create not an argument, but rather a dialogue that will hopefully become a catalyst for action regarding issues that we should all care about. Today's topic is: Why is health care so expensive in the United States? We are one of the only states in the world without national health care, but yet, our taxes are among the highest in the world. So the question is... why is health care such a large expense for Americans. Writer, blogger, and educator, John Green of Vlogbrothers explains it all: By George Goner (The Haunted Cabaret) Until it closed, Meacham Regional Elementary School had its traditions. The Christmas Pageant began as a fundraiser the same year the building opened, and continued a string of annual performances uninterrupted until the state inspector closed the school in 1998.
The year that Timothy Vento died, the event raised $1,700.00. Mrs. Bridge, the teacher in charge of that year's Pageant, staged a `religions-should-be-nice-to-each-other' theme. Everything went well the first half of the program. Five minutes into the second half, eight-year-old Oliver Kurtz knocked over a Jewish Menorah. The Menorah fell and landed in the manger, crushing the skull of the Baby Jesus. By George Goner (The Haunted Cabaret) Yesterday I had a discussion with a couple of movie special effects enthusiasts, and ruffled a few feathers when I suggested that there is no such thing as making a movie special effect look real. The best we can hope for, I said, is to fool the mind into believing something looks real. Not quite the same thing; but, on the plus side, the human mind is usually willing to be fooled. After all, we have been trained since childhood to suspend our disbelief and accept all manner of magical and ridiculous ideas, from religious rituals to Santa Claus.
