The Department of Labor and Training (DLT) announced today that a malfunctioning mail-sorting machine caused the Social Security Numbers (SSNs) of as many as 832 Unemployment Insurance (UI) customers to be misdirected and exposed to the wrong employers or customers. As of today, DLT knows of 18 customers whose full SSNs were sent to the wrong employers.
Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are down two cents from last week, the second consecutive week of lower prices, according to AAA Northeast.
AAA’s July 20th survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.73 per gallon, down two cents from last week. Prices locally are seven cents lower than a month ago. The current price is three cents less than the national average for regular unleaded of $2.76. A year ago at this time Rhode Island’s average price was 95 cents higher at $3.68. Superior Court Justice Luis Matos sentenced Ernest Sabourin (age 75), with a last known address of 120 Earle Street, Central Falls, to 25 years to serve for two counts of first degree sexual assault, one count of second degree sexual assault, and two counts of simple assault. In addition, Justice Matos ordered Sabourin to have no contact with the victim, undergo sex offender counseling and comply with the sex offender registration and notification requirements upon release. Sabourin was found guilty by a jury on May 8, 2015 after a three-day trial.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin today released a new public service announcement (PSA) on the dangers of drunk driving. Featuring a striking, black and white aesthetic and equally striking statistics on the prevalence and deadliness of drunk driving, the PSA uses young people who are not actors to add greater authenticity to the message it delivers.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) has been notified that Barber Foods is recalling nearly two million pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed chicken products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. The affected products have been linked to at least six illnesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin. No illnesses linked to the products have been reported in Rhode Island, but the recalled products were sold in Rhode Island stores, including Stop and Shop, Shaw's, Walmart, and Sam's Club. The chicken products were produced between February 17, 2015 and May 20, 2015. Anyone who has purchased a recalled product should throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased.
