From the quality of the meat to the freshness of the bun, a lot goes into crafting the perfect burger. Okay, a disclaimer here. I’m not the most intense baseball fan in New England. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the game and it’s rich history in my life, but I can’t name you stats and I forget players I should remember in a haze of years of disappointment and then elation. My relationship with the Pawtucket Red Sox had deteriorated in the past two years, mostly over the threats they were making regarding leaving the state after 47 years, but in my youth and well into my adult years, I was fortunate enough to see some amazing baseball at McCoy Stadium. From the young startups that would become legends, to the major players sent down for rehab that you’d get to really see up close, and who could forget the longest recorded baseball game (June 23, 1981…33 innings…Sox beat Rochester Red Wings 3-2) right in Pawtucket. The Bucket. Poor Pawtucket. Never got the respect location wise. And McCoy could be a desolate destination. The surrounding area of ballpark was kind of bleak and underdeveloped.

The seeds were planted when Ben Mondor passed away in 2010, opening the door for a group of prominent businessmen to eventually acquire one of Rhode Island’s icons, the AAA affiliate of The Boston Red Sox, The Pawtucket Red Sox. Depending on who you ask, this past week’s announcement that the team will relocate to Worcester, MA beginning in 2021 is based largely on several factors: The State of Rhode Island’s inability to pass legislation to expand the public-private relationship between it has with the PawSox, and allow for the construction of a partially-publicly-financed new stadium at the location of the former Apex building off of interstate 95 in Pawtucket; Rhode Island taxpayers, who made it clear that they were largely unwilling to enter into a major public-private investment, still in the malaise of the horrendous 38 studios episode; or a ‘spiteful’ ownership group that wanted to embarrass House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello by pulling the ballclub out of Rhode Island just as political season is heating up in The Ocean State.

The Brown Bears opened practice on Saturday, Aug. 17 in preparation for their season opener on the West Coast against Cal Poly. Brown started physical testing on Friday and will practice every day until Wednesday, Sep. 5, when classes start. After winning only two games last season, Head Coach Phil Estes will look to improve in the standings with a new group of kids and different schemes on both sides of the ball. Estes will coach in his 200th career game in the season opener, and has won three Ivy League Championships since taking the reins for the Bears in 1998.

One month before the primaries on September 12th, Patricia Morgan sits at a 32.4% favorability rating amongst Rhode Island voters, with many voters having no opinion on her. She’ll likely need more than that though to win the primary and find herself against the Democratic nominee come November. Looking to defeat GOP favorite Allan Fung in the primaries, Morgan puts a lot of her focus on fiscal conservatism and fixing the state of Rhode Island. Patricia spoke with members of the 990WBOB.com political news team to speak about her campaign. |
