Bartholomewtown News: Game Day

After a monthslong campaign season, game day has finally arrived for the contenders in the various Democratic and Republican primary elections being held in Rhode Island today.  While
several General Assembly and City Council races command attention, there are three statewide races that are rightfully front and center: the gubernatorial primaries on the Democratic and Republican side, and the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor.

On the Democratic side, incumbent Governor Gina Raimondo, who has refused to debate her opponents Matt Brown and Spencer Dickinson, commanded a strong lead in the most recent publicly released (albeit dated) polling data.

However, on Saturday, Mr. Brown told a crowd of several hundred supporters at his ‘Rally To Take Back Rhode Island’, that he and Governor Raimondo were “tied” and that he was “on the verge of a major political upset.”

While no polling data has been produced to verify this statement, The Raimondo Team has noticeably ramped up their negative mailers in recent days, suggesting that the contest may be closer than the most-recent publicly available polling data indicates.

Also on the ballot for Democratic voters is the Lieutenant Governor’s race, pitting incumbent Dan McKee against State Representative Aaron Regunberg, in what many analysts, including this writer, have described as a barometer for the magnitude of young, progressive voters turning out to the polls en masse, in a bid to champion their values.

Conversely, will an older, more conservative brand of Democrats dominate the polls today, and reaffirm that their vision and priorities are the driving force behind the party?

On the Republican slate, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung has remained the front runner, though opponent Giovanni Feroce and Patricia Morgan have maintained their intention to be victorious this evening.

IN ADDITION to the candidates themselves, this is also a big day for the Rhode Island media.
