Blizzard of '78 (Photo: Projo) When I was a teen we were expecting a snow dusting, nothing serious maybe several inches, so I got dressed and drove to school for another boring school day. The year was 1978; the small dusting turned into 27 inches of snow and was known as the Blizzard of 78. Me and my school mates crashed at my parent’s house for a couple days and then made the rounds their houses, the point is we survived. The Blizzard of 78 we got caught with our pants down, Weather men and Weather services did Not See this Blizzard Coming. We did not have advanced Doppler radar and Weather computerized models that can predict weather patterns with pin point accuracy. We lost power for days and in spite of the chaos we were up and running within a week. We endured many severe snow storms back then, we would lose electricity more often but it would be in shorted spurts maybe 30 minutes worse case a couple hours. The city plowing trucks were older with less advance equipment but the roads would be plowed to the point of being drivable within a couple hours after the storm. People would buy snow Tires. People would ANTICIPATE Winter storms living in RHODE ISLAND. And learn how to COPE WITH SNOW. Last week we had the Blizzard of 2013, Even though we have better technology, radars, and computers, storm alerts on your cell phones, newer plows and trucks and despite all this they STILL CAN’T PLOW THE ROADS IN RHODE ISLAND? Worse of all our State and City Officials acted like Elitist and threat us with fines if we didn’t OBEY and the National Grid still had excuses for 10% of Rhode Islanders losing power but still is charging more money every year while service diminishes. Mine you State Officials had several days to prepare for the Blizzard. So of course they F*** that up ,and on short notice Governor Chaffee stops smoking weed and worshiping Barrack Obama long enough the Ban travel on all state highways with disregard to the working stiffs stuck at their job or the small business owners trying to survive the Depression of 13. Of course State and City Officials were dismissed early. Than at 6:25pm before the eye of the storm my elderly Mother losses electricity even though here rates increase her electricity decreased? How is it we seem to lose power with every storm and instead of being without electricity for several hours now it is a minimum of 2 days to 2 weeks? How come National Grids sucks so bad without a State investigation on why? The kicker was the next day I see Tweedledum & Tweedledee, Mayor Angel Taveras and his side kick Steve Pare the original Diablo Blanco (White Devil). Explaining to me why, a day later after the storm with a No Drive Ban in place, the roads of Providence are not in condition for vehicles to drive on. The best part is when Pare had a bunch of Traffic Violations in his hand and as he was shacking them in front of the camera said “If you shovel snow on the road it is a $100 fine and if you do not shovel your sidewalk it is a $25 fine and these fines will INCREASE!“. As this is happening I receive a call out from one of my crew who resides in Providence he tells me he cannot make work today because they DID NOT PLOW MY ROAD YET? Does the City care about him missing a day pay, heck how can he pay their fine? All I know if the Blizzard of 78 stuck today we would have to Hibernate like a Bear until the Spring. -WildSide David Clyde |
