It has been a Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde season for the Patriots so far. While they have beaten their opponents (New York Jets and Houston Texans) and displayed dominance at key junctures, at home was a different story. At Gillette, the Patriots have struggled more so than in years past. They have turned the ball over at key points and have been bested by all three opponents they faced. Trying to find their first win at home, they welcomed in the NFC East division-leading Dallas Cowboys. The two teams squared off in a back-and-forth in a game that needed overtime to determine a winner. But some of the problems that plagued the Patriots throughout the season reared their ugly heads as in the end, the team and their fans found heartbreak and seeking questions. Check out the boys from The Last Slice podcast as they react to the official "Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon" trailer set to release in early 2022. "Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon" is the story of the Targaryen civil war that took place about 300 years before events portrayed in "Game of Thrones". After years and years of success and having winning records going into the month of October, the New England Patriots were in uncharted waters for the first time in a long time. They were under .500 (1-3) and were faced with roster changes. They traded All-Pro CB Stephon Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers, starting RT Trent Brown went on IR as his calf injury seemed to be getting worse and worse, and 3 of their starting offensive linemen (LT Isiah Wynn, LG Michael Onwenu, and RG Shaq Mason) had tested positive for COVID. Fortunately, with the next game being against an opponent that the Patriots have had success in the past against, the Houston Texans, it seemed that those problems wouldn’t factor in. But on Sunday in NRG Stadium down in Houston, Texas, the Patriots found themselves in a dogfight with the Texans. Down big early and with their season in jeopardy, the team clawed and fought their way while taking advantage of their opponent’s miscues. When the dust settled, the Patriots found themselves back in the winning circle and hopefully on the winning path. Ryan L. Fox
For nearly two decades, the New England Patriots enjoyed an unprecedented amount of success that was not only unmatched in football but in all of sports. This was in part to the coach-quarterback combo of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. With both of them on the Patriots, the team been to 9 Super Bowls while winning 6 of them, had a multitude of AFC Championship appearances, and over a dozen AFC East Divisional titles. But in a shocking decision, the Patriots allowed Brady to walk in free agency during the NFL 2020 offseason. There were reports that there was a small strife between Brady and Belichick and despite each side saying there wasn’t any, there clearly was and that ultimately led to the decision of Tom Brady leaving the team. On Sunday night, Tom Brady made his return to Gillette Stadium with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who he led to a Super Bowl championship in 2020. Being showered by boos, cheers, and the rain, the man simply known as ‘The GOAT’ and his team did battle against the hometown Patriots for 60 minutes in the cold and wet October night. But when it mattered the most, one team was able to get the big play and one team could only just stand there and hang their heads in defeat. Ryan L. Fox
Almost 8 years ago in Foxboro, the New England Patriots were facing a 27-23 deficit at home against the New Orleans Saints. With 1:13 left in the 4th quarter, QB Tom Brady drove his team down the field before finding WR Kenbrell Thompkins in the left side of the end zone for the game winning touchdown in what would go down as the ‘Unicorns, Show Ponies, Where’s the Beef’ game (courtesy of Patriots color commentator Scott Zolak). Now this past Sunday, the Patriots welcomed in the Saints to Gillette for a midday matinee on a warm, sunny fall day in September. Unlike previous matchups where it was an offensive battle and points were a plenty, things were different this time around. It was a defensive lead charge by the visiting Saints who punched the Patriots in the mouth as the home team could not recover and as the game went on, the Saints continued to punch and the Patriots continued to stumble backwards. |
