The Providence Journal this week transitioned to a new website, and one major error has already been spotted. An article posted January 20, 2015, and entitled "Mother Cooks Son, Puts TV Dinner to Bed" is clearly a fake news article. While articles like this are common for satirical publications, such a The Onion, we are talking about the four-time Pulitzer Prize winning Providence Journal with a circulation of 100,000. This article is currently (at time of press) still live on their website. (UPDATE: At 3:12 PM, the Providence Journal finally removed the article.) The article tells a fake account of a Cranston stripper who mistakenly placed her 5-month old son in the microwave, and tucked her Swanson TV dinner into bed. The article even includes an attempted humorous quote: "It should have been a tipoff when Daydream had a metallic taste when I kissed him goodnight," said the 26-year-old exotic dancer. Even worse, the article's byline is attributed to a fictional writer, AL Zymers -- a clear parody of Alzheimer's Disease, the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. While it can be assumed that this article was a sample article used for testing the new site layout, it is clearly a major oversight and in exceptionally poor taste for this article to be live on its site at present time. Full Text Mother cooks son, puts TV dinner to bed It was a bad day in the Mecurio household. Attempts to reach the Providence Journal for comment were not immediately returned. |
