Branding 101 is clear: In order for your brand to get noticed, you need a commanding logo. In order for your logo to be powerful, it must be clear, tell a story, and induce an emotional response. A great logo can catapult a brand, while a misfire can result in disaster. Case in point: last year’s “Cooler & Warmer” tourism campaign debacle right here in Rhode Island, which cost the state’s chief marketing officer her job.
While states, automotive brands, tech companies and the like have multi-million dollar budgets for branding and re-branding campaigns, what about the little guys? Startup companies and smaller scale operations often do not have adequate budgets to hire marketing companies to design their brand. In this case, it’s often left up to the business itself to come up with a logo and slogan that can make or break their business.
Luckily, a new online logo maker named DesignEvo has arrived. DesignEvo allows businesses and individuals create unique and professional logos in an easy to use format. And best of all it’s free. Just because DesignEvo is free doesn’t mean that the online tool skimps on the features. In fact, the new tool contains over one million searchable icons and hundreds of fonts and shapes—all of which allow you to create the perfect logo. How it works As stated above, DesignEvo allows the user to literally search over one million icons and hundreds of shapes. With the sheer amount of attractive choices to choose from, I don’t foresee any issues with not finding an appropriate logo to build your brand. In order to choose an icon, you simply type a keyword into a search bar and look through the results. Just to get a feel of the possible results, I searched “restaurant” and “hair salon,” which resulted in countless images that would be adequate for a new restaurant, barber shop or salon. DesignEvo also allows you to increase or decrease the icon’s size, change its color (solid or gradient), add effects and rotate it. Once you’re happy with the icon, you can add shapes if you like. For example, you can add badges, lines, solid shapes and decorations like laurel wreaths. Next, you click on the text icon to type your company’s name and slogan. There are classic fonts—similar to what you’d find on Microsoft word—and art fonts for added flare. As is true with the icons and shapes, you can also customize the font’s color. When you’re happy with your design you can save the image as both JPG and PNG. As a non-design person, I messed around with DesignEvo for about half an hour and tried my hand at a new 990WBOB logo. These are some of the images I came up with:
Tips
Rather than double clicking to choose icons, shapes or text, I found it much easier to drag the icons and text boxes to the right side (or work screen). If you double click, DesignEvo defaults all images, lines, text, shapes, etc. on top of one another, which makes editing difficult. By dragging, you can lay out your materials in an easy to view format. Verdict DesignEvo is an easy to use and highly customizable branding tool that will please most budget-minded consumers. Although it’s free, DesignEvo allows you to create eye-catching logos in a matter of minutes. As a layman, I was impressed with DesignEvo’s array of features, but I think that even a marketing person with experience in graphic design may be impressed.
